and if you have any close ups on how it goes onto the carb etc.I'm wanting to build a home brew turbo motor running quite low boost and I'm abit unsure how or what carb set up to use?

main thing i think is to run boost pressure to the float chamber as when boosting it'll blow the fuel back into the float chamber from the main jet.

Bike carbs - most from the nineties on will take up to 1bar of pressure. Just make up a plenum chamber for them. Look at what J did to his Imp.  *n |

Did the early Lotus Esprit Turbos get around this problem by mounting the whole carb in a box, then pressurinsing the box, to create a high pressure atmosphere around the carb. I've been thinking about this just recently, it would get round presure blowing out seals and fuel back into the float chamber. getting the fuel pipe in would be easy to seal but the throttle linkage could be a problem, then i thought perhaps if it was hydraulic it could be made to work. |

wouldnt it be simple to use factory made parts from say mg turbos, renaults?? presurised su,s worked well for rover in the 80s........

I thought about the box option, but after you've solved the problem of sealing the accelerator cable, choke cable etc, you've got to consider the heat that will be trapped in that box. It put me off to be honest as I had nightmares about fuel vapourising. MG Turbo SU's and 5 GT Turbo carbs are readily available. Bike carbs are an option but there's the added cost of jetting and setting them up. Apparently Dell'Orto and Weber twin 40's can take boost but again they're expensive to jet and buy in the first place. Of course none of this matters if you're running draw-thru, but then you might have lots of lag and can't use an intercooler |

there cant just be an easy way can there? really, you're not looking at a turbo unit, you're looking at the unit, an intercooler, carb or injection to handle the pressure, fuel regulator, boost regulator, wastegates... i wanna understand this concept, really i do. i fear i never will  |

Isn't the big problem with suck-though turbos that when the throttle shuts on the overrun the vacuum sucks all the oil past of the turbo's oil seals? Plus, all that fuel going into a hot turbo scares me a bit – didn't some of those early conversions go up in smoke? Looks dead simple to do though.
I'd use R5 Turbo or MG Montego Turbo kit to convert and adapt it.

Been looking at this - alongside superchargin too. But I can't find any detail on how to modify standard SU's to handle the pressure of a turbo setup  ..... anyone got any links? |

to make a standard SU hif44(standard 1275 metro carb) turbo proof all i did was buy the throttle seals and the little clamp for the dashpot vwalla instant turbo carb about £15 ish andy
