Hi all,
I have just started a conversion on a Vauxhall Combo high roof van.
The first task as always was to strip out the interior and give it a good clean.
Once she was nice and clean I went through the ply lining, finessed the fit and started covering them with lining carpet.
This van will be a stealth van and so will not be fitted with windows but it will have a roof light/vent so that's the next job.
Cheers - mike

hi all, got a bit more done today. Went over to leeds to collect some flooring so that can go down tomorrow. Spent and hour making a support frame for the roof vent and cutting out the hole in the van roof and then after lunch got the roof vent installed. Tomorrow should see the flooring down, first fix wiring and the insulation fitted. Cheers - mike

Takes a brave man to chop a hole in the roof! 😳

Takes a brave man to chop a hole in the roof! 😳 its one of the most stressful parts of the job. I fit windows as well so some quite big holes to cut. I haven't cut any wrong yet but there's always a first time.

hi all got a few more bits done today between hail and rain showers. I went over to leeds to collect some altro flooring and this afternoon got it fitted. Made up the mains leads for the van, a standard lead and an adapter lead so that the camper can be plugged into a standard 3 pin outlet. I should start the carpet lining on Monday and on Tuesday I'm going to pick up the rock and roll bed. Once I have the bed in position I can assess what units I can fit. Cheers - mike

Hi all, I didn't get a lot done on Monday. Spent most of the day looking after my grandson. Had a good day today though. I went over to darkest Lancashire to collect the rock and roll bed. I had it custom made to fit this van so always a bit nervous when it comes to actually trying it for fit. I have also made up the templates for the top cupboard so will be getting on with that tomorrow. Cheers - mike

Hi all, had a steady day working on fitting the seat and making the overhead cupboards. Fitting the seat was a bit fiddly as there's no spare room at all so no tolerance. The overhead cupboards have been a bit of a challenge too as nothings straight in the van, the roof, sides and cant rails are all curved. Anyways, the carcass and doors are done and temporarily mounted, I have the base to make in the morning and they will be done. I will then need to take them down so I can do the carpet lining. I should make a start on the base units tomorrow all being well, I need to find space for the leisure battery and diesel heater. The aren't many options for the heater as the inlet and exhaust have to pass through the floor and there's lots of chassis rails and support to work around. I may also modify the heater set up from the last few I have done as the fuel pumps tend to be quite noisy so I may mount it under the van or in an insulated enclosure. Cheers - mike

Just out of interest Mike, does the floor sit on the ribs, or is it contoured, or flexible enough to fit over them? What's the advantage of removing the wood floor? Cheers

hi there
there's a 12mm ply floor screwed down to the ribbed van floor and then the altro flooring goes on top.

hi all,
had a good day on the camper today. The top cupboard is now finished and fitted for good and I have started the carpet lining.
I also spent some time sorting out a location for the diesel heater. The only place that's available is in the center of the floor under the rock and roll bed so I will need to change the design of the kick board on the seat as usually its mounted to the moving part of the seat.
No pics today as I had lost the sunlight before I finished.
Cheers - mike

Thanks for the updates, always enjoy seeing your updates. If the combo is like a connect or caddy there may be a footwell space hidden between the two sliding doors. It always seems a waste of space to me just for ease of a flat floor. I've always thought it would be nice to have some factory draws/bins either side, but for the camper I'd imagine the heater one side and water tank the other. Then again a combo might be different. Hi nick,
There aren't any usable cavities under the floor on a Doblo and the chassis / support structure is quite extensive. I have fitted heaters and water tanks under other vehicles such Vivaro's to free up internal space but as this is a budget build with a specific spec from the owner there's not the budget to do to much.
There will be a unit on the drivers side which will house the leisure battery and other electrical equipment.
Cheers - mike

hi all not the best of days for building campers as the weather has been foul and is still getting worse. The roof on my garage has been flexing up and down and the up and over door keeps opening itself. Anyways still got a bit done. I have made and fitted a door to the lower unit, made and fitted the front half of the ceiling and installed the 240v socket plus a few buts of finessing here and there. Cheers - mike

I REALLY need to read the text as well as looking at the pics! First thought was 'That combos got loads of space inside...oh!' 😁
