The problem with the late XJs and XF's is you're either stuck with decent petrol engines but not many mpg's and crazy road tax, or top 3 worst diesel engine ever made and the ol' piston smoker Transit engine.
The repair costs are crazy too, especially offset against the value of the car.

Now that would be the winner in this thread for me! Never even noticed the banan-A. Yeah - I'd rock one. It's sort of like a Lotus Esprit met a Ford Granada, but in a good way.

I was having a think and a complete underdog when it comes to retro luxo-barges has got to be the mk2 Vauxhall Victor. Like they're almost completely forgotten, despite their almost Stuttgart-level looks and poise. Imagine one of these with some sort of Holden V8 in the front. Lovely.

Or a Lotus Carlton engine I also think the Fiat 130 (the V6 one from the late 60s/70s) has a certain style though they have mostly rusted away by now. Yes I owned one and it rusted everyday. Two engines the first version had the 2.8 V6 and the second had it in 3.2. The coupe version is drop dead gorgeous but the photo is a 2.8 saloon

Got me curious now. Are those diesel engines particularly unreliable? The 2.2 is a Euro 5 Transit engine, which TBF are a good engine let down by all the curse word strapped to them. Most common fault is a fuel injector goes down and holes a piston, but there's no warning that its going wrong. Also oil/EGR cooler related overheating. 2.7 and 3.0 V6 diesel are just the worst. Spun main bearings is the usual issue, for no diagnosable reason hence the repair bills are crazy as you end up having to change tons of parts just incase.

I am pretty sure only the defender got the Transit engine, the rest got the peugeot DW engines, ford /psa V6/8 or later jaguars own ingenium engine.

You're right, saw Duratorq 2.2 on the Google result and assumed it was a Transit engine. The DW12 type thing is a better proposition, though even they sometimes have issues (as far as we can tell a batch were released that weren't bored to the correct size, but all the ones we've had with that have been Range Rover Evoques)

Is the Rover 75 old enough for this forum? I've seen this on a Facebook for sale post and I think it fits here.

Mines getting up to 150k and some ex taxis seeing the 500k mark. Suspension bits are cheap and the XJ is aluminium so rot isn't an issue. Unless your meaning the new new tiny engines, then i have zero experience. Either way lows and wheels may be on the cards!

Got another one in my car at the moment haha. Only good bit about them is a get a early finish to drop off/pick them up from Bradford so they can be line bored.
