Hello folks. I am the proud owner of a roller! I bought it yesterday along with a paint tray and some Dulux and will set to and smarten up the Hallway tomorrow. But, while I was preparing for this mammoth task I remembered when I roller painted a car I had years ago. I'd previously hand painted it (with the help of a brush ) and it looked rather like a Chimp had done it which, come to think of it, is quite ironic given that my last name is Gibbons! Anyway; I was going to be selling one of my classics in order to chuck some money at another one but thought, perhaps, instead of selling a car I love I should roller paint it. I was wondering if anyone on here has ever done this, but done it properly with a glass-like finish and could perhaps share some tips on how to achive it please.
Many thankings.

See also: graffiti paint, I use Montana Black, which is semi-gloss satin, available in a multitude of colours, and Montana White, a high gloss, again, many colours. Quicker, easier and a better out-of-the-box finish than a roller. Gloss Satin

Thanks Rich. At the risk of sounding thick, how do you apply it? Brush or spray?

Hold on, I've just re-thought my question; it'll be spray. I should have seen the 'Graffitti' clue! ;-)

Forget any preconceived notion about aerosol coverage, you can paint a car with a can per panel +2 additional for roof and bonnet. Also less than a fiver a can. I use Graff-city.co.uk For my supplies.

I just rollered my campervan. Used paintman paints enamel. By no means perfect finish as I was restricted by time but would highly recommend as easy to apply and can just use a brush. Really easy to mask up and any drips on windows I just scraped off with a Stanley blade. I'm also sure if you went for a colour rather than white would have a lot better coverage. Reckon could do a car with £100 of materials. My van being a bit bigger used approx 3lts of primer and Top coat.

I figured it would cost less to roller than aerosol, costs including masking tape for a car are around £55-60 in graff paint if you mask up with old newspapers. I would expect a van to cost around £70-80 though so not a huge saving to be had but it’s a lot quicker to spray.

IIRC if you WERE painting a Roller (a proper one, not a German in a flash suit) you'd be hand painting it anyway.....🤗

Ah yes but...when I said 'hand' painting I could have been refering to reverting back to my childhood, sticking my hands in a big tin of red Valspar Coach paint and running round the house touching everything I could see in the shortest space of time before me Dad came home and he took his belt off to me and sent me to bed with no supper at 5;15pm. .......but I wasn't BUT....I do see what you mean.

Work colleague is a traditional coach painter and gets amazing results, a lit of graft to get these results though. Sorry for rubbish photo.

Thats a really nice result. After I posted my last post I had a quick goose....sorry...gander on TheeTube (my computer is old)and I found a chap roller painting the bottom of a boat. What I thought was a bit unusual was, after he rollered a section he put the roller down, picked up a brush and gently brushed it across. Very theraputic (at least for me watching it) and the results were like glass..well, it looked like it on my computer screen anyway. I'll see if I can find the clip....I may be some time as I get distracted.

Look...here he his. The only thing I would add is; this method must take ages because he was doing this last night at 5;15pm and when I just found it a few minutes ago he was still at it! Mind you, the results look smashing.

I'm going to take an educated guess and say his brush didn't come in a pack of 12 from B&M and cost £1.99.

done that technique on a 26 foot bilge keel yacht, took ages but the result was very pleasing, mostly I did the rollering and my girlfriend at the time was following with the brush, wet sanded after that, 3 layers! we're still friends at some point when I get round to it I'll be doing my ZX with the same method, for the primer at least.

I rollered this 10 years ago with rustoleum, still shines up nice now. Did do the lower half of my t4 last year and got a bad finish, but I think that was a combination of cheap rollers and cheap white spirits to thin it
