So I've lusted after a pickup of some sort for quite a while and I've made no secret of it. I don't need one for practicality, but I just think they're iceberg cool. Inspired by a post in the PICKUP TRUCKS thread I've been investigating the import of one of Smyth's UTE conversion kits. The two that appeal are the new shape Beetle kits, and the Jeep WJ. CASE FOR THE JEEP: I already own a WJ jeep , so therefore no need to source one Kit is $500 cheaper Would create a larger & more useable space, whilst still being able to offroad etc. CASE AGAINST: My Jeep is thirsty and a bit rough, even taking out all the bits that would be removed. It would still be a loud gas guzzling jeep, just with less seats. CASE FOR THE BEETLE: I think I prefer the lines on this one, and love how they've incorporated a step side - arguably more retro chops Would create a more useable car in the longer term (smaller, less thirsty in whichever guise). CASE AGAINST: I don't own a Beetle, so there's about £500-1k I've got to add to the budget - and I've got to find a good base car. Kit is more expensive I'd have to thin out the burgeoning fleet first All votes, thoughts and ideas welcome - if there's anything I've missed or not considered I'm all ears!

I voted Beetle as i think the lines are better .
But , there’s a good case for the Jeep as it’ll be a lot cheaper .
So guess I’m really 50/50 .
Not much help I know .

I'd have the beetle, but what about IVA?
If the jeep is a separate chassis, no need for IVA?

Jeep looks like it might have been a factory job, Beetle looks different, depends what you want on that score. The Beetle rear arches look reminiscent of a 1950's US pickup.....

In my eyes the beetle looks unmistakably custom and quite cool for it. The Jeep looks like something that could have rolled off a production line and I probably wouldn't look twice at it in passing.
Probably just showing my ignorance of all things Jeep though!

I'd have the beetle, but what about IVA? If the jeep is a separate chassis, no need for IVA? Annoyingly the WJ is a unibody also.

Another point in favour of the Beetle is it should sell easily later down the line, being a more mainstream base.

Of the two, Beetle, it's more of a head turner, as said before the Jeep looks like it came out of the factory like that.
PT Cruiser?

My mum had one...whilst it might look the part it was probably the worst car I've ever driven. Scarred me for life. I'm sure it would make a cool pickup, but just not for me...

Beetle, I wouldn't even clock the jeep as being a custom.

Judged on the front 3/4 aspect images provided for the poll I'd vote for the Beetle. How do they look side-on and from the rear though? The Jeep is more likely to look factory but those angles might show the Beetle disproportioned.

sensible head in here
i think both would be subject to iva ?
account for customs charges on kit import
other than that i like both buy big juicy gas guzzler would probably make me opt out of that one but a cheap beetle turbo converted would be a big yes

Yeah the import charges are 20% VAT and 4.5% duty (I think) makes the kit basically the same price in £ as in $. I'm leaning towards the Bug as I can see me using it more. I've got a base car in mind to look at already...

What you NEED is a Suzuki Mighty boy, 660cc of Kei pickup. Not fast, cant carry much, not big. But look at them! And no IVA needed

It may be a moot point, but would either kit be capable of passing IVA? As the mk4 Golf based pickup kit from the states has a lot of bonded on and plastic structure parts My vote would be the Jeep, but thats because I've worked on both, and Beetles I won't talk about on here

Could you sidestep an iva by starting with a beetle convertible, cabriolet? It doesnt have a roof from the factory. Technically bonding a hardtop to a factory monocoque drop top
