I have an old wooden gear knob that was made about 25 years ago by someone who made wooden items in the Mini Club I was in. Thing is, whatever was in the bottom of it which allowed it to be screwed on to the gearstick is no longer there. Instead there's a hulking great 1/2" hole. I like this knob and would really like to use it, but I don't know the best way to sort it.
One idea I have had is to fill the cavity with fibreglass resin and then drill and tap it, but I am unsure whether the resin would take a tap.
Do any of you wonderful people on here have any suggestions?

Don't know what thread you need it to be so they might not go big enough but have a look at wood thread inserts.

You would be better filling it with Quicksteel or an epoxy resin, both would take a tap easily.
Could you find a nut that fits and then bond that into the gearknob?

Don't know what thread you need it to be so they might not go big enough but have a look at wood thread inserts. It's for a Mini gear lever so finding an insert to match the thread may be more difficult. All I can find is metric stuff. Plus the hole in the knob is way bigger than the likely insert.

I have plenty of epoxy so that sounds like it's the right plan.I have also found an appropriate nut. I think we have a winner here! Thanks guys!

Hi, You could try putting a piece of rubber hose into the knob and then screwing it onto the gear lever which will tighten it up. I suggest this because that's how Rover P6's knobs are fitted.

I had fix something similar in a gear knob for my dad. I drilled and tapped a M12 bolt out to the thread for the gearstick, put a big leading edge on it then filled the hole in the knob up with 2 part epoxy and wound the insert in after it had gone off a bit. It's still on the car now and it must be nearly 10 years since I did it.

Try using polymorph. Plastic beads that when you put in hot water they go clear and then you can shape to whatever. Mind out as they are hot. Mould it around the gear lever and small enough to glue in to the gear knob. Once cooled they retain the shape. If you get it wrong pop them back in hot water and try again.
