Hi all, saw another post about small mods that make a big difference. Made me think about the mods that I did back in my youth that cost nothing (because I was skint) and I thought were cool (because I was a bit of a curse word🤣). In no particular order.....
- Chopping springs (standard) - Making a hole in my exhaust with a hammer and screwdriver to make it sound louder - A spark plug in my exhaust to create flames (this did actually work in my Pulsar GTiR, although it did get me a ticket from the plod) - Blacked out windows all round (another ticket from the plod🙄) - Altering the letters on my number plate to look different, but unreadable (and you guessed it.....another ticket from the plod) - Spray painting lights/ pair of tights over the rear lights🤣 Plod didn’t seem to mind this one
Anyone else got any more?

Back in the day single cherry bomb on escort 1100 total waste but sounded loud Racing stripe over the bonnet roof and boot on many of my mk1 escorts Shell sport sunstrips on the screen Big spot light on the rear panel trying to recreate the rally look😂 And a large burton power sticker across the rear panel under the bumper

Fitting wider tyres on any given size rim that they weren’t meant for, so it (obviously 🙈) handled better....yeh course it did Reverse light on rear bumper with pencil beam, on a separate switch so you could melt the retina’s of tailgaters

Fast Car Magazine gave away a free trial sheet of fake carbon wrap stuff, and I waited until a month after it was released and bought about ten issues at about 25p each IIRC. Did loads of interior bits in my mk2 XR2 and a couple of mates motors. At the time, we thought it was great (in which case I should have posted it in Grizz's thread mentioned above) but looking back it was awful! Might be able to do a better job nowadays with the more modern vinyls

Plod pulled me over one day and asked me to operate my rear washer.....busted

Thruster side pipes on a custom car & maybe some Starsky & Hutch stripes. You will have to be a certain age to get this maybe

Reverse light on rear bumper with pencil beam, on a separate switch so you could melt the retina’s of tailgaters Back around the end of the 60's very few cars came with reversing lights (at least the ones we could afford) so a spotlight on the boot lid / back panel was was de rigueur on the cars we drove, great for reversing and as above very effective against tailgaters

A sports exhaust on my Alto, race stripes and number 46 on the doors. I loved it. It was all nonsense but , my car my toy. Not retro in years but 100% retro in the way it drove...

In the mid 2000s - about 2004 - exposed exhausts with round bar grills / valances were all the rage so I cut out all of the plastic valance on my smart roadster at the time and replaced it with two round brushed steel bars from an IKEA towel rail.
The actual bars looked okay but I didn’t realise how much the standard exhaust was exposed and how bad it looked. I tried painting it in black heatproof paint but that only helped from a distance, It might have been okay if I had fitted a stainless exhaust.
I’ll dig out a photo if I get chance soon.

Well I bought 10 of those and put black viper stripes on my white Cavalier SRi. Yes, those were the days. I have no pics to disprove this, but I remember the execution actually went quite well. Here is a picture of a similar (very similar, obviously) coloured viper with the same execution Naturally, my Cavvy was slightly better looking than an actual Viper with the stripes.

Union 76 aerial toppers on my Beetle. Constantly stolen and a great way to have your aerial snapped off in the process. Good times.
Oh and the classic 6x9's hacked into the parcel shelf. Standard.
