The new layout here has thrown me a bit so I am hoping I have put this in the right place. If not please tell me and I will move.
I have been on the look out for a 1.8T 20V engine, not actively looking but just a casual browse every now and again. The conversion I have in mind requires a very specific engine from the VAG range due to the hole it needs to fit into. I know golf and polos like to use the 20VT engine and I understand they can use a wide range of engine codes. Unfortunately I cant and I need a specific code of engine, I wont mention the specific engine code, because I don't want to lead anyone who can potentially offer any advice to the wrong conclusion (if that makes any sort of strange sense).
A car has popped up locally for breaking, however the seller hasn't been able to locate the engine code despite numerous attempts and photos. The car still has the plastic engine cover fitted and I don't really want to ask them to go pulling the thing apart for it to be the wrong code. Is there any way that I can obtain the engine code from the registration number or possibly is it chucked into the VIN number or something like that? The whole car has been offered at a fantastic price and this way I can confirm it is a good runner and take my time stripping the required components out of the loom and getting everything ready for a conversion.
The vehicle in question is a 1999 1.8T Audi A4 Avant in manual and it is not a quattro model. The reg if anyone knows of a decoder is V63MKE
Thanks in advance for any help.

I love the BAM, had a few and think they’re fantastic, however I’m after a specific transverse mounted engine code. Thanks.

On my 20vt it’s here Mine is AGU. This has a throttle cable. Later ones are fly by wire.

Wouldn’t it be an AJL?
180 brake model?
Or AEB 150 brake?

I love the BAM, had a few and think they’re fantastic, however I’m after a specific transverse mounted engine code. Thanks. Never understood the whole BAMscene tax, essentially they are the same, Yes there are small and large port heads,19mm and 20mm wrist pins 150,180,210 and 225bhp models however don't get hung up on a particular engine code. All of them have cheese for rods and anything much over a basic remap need forged rods. If its just for an engine swap you want a wide band me7.5 ecu. Are you planning on tuning it? if so whats your power goal, Why do you specifically needs a transverse engine, you can mount a longitudinal engine transverse, (ive done it for 6 yrs in my race car) What box is it going onto? As you have mentioned in your original post not wanting to mention things, feel free to PM me. Ive built several over the years for racing and had a few as road cars over the past 15 years or so. And as most posts are usless without a picture see a picture of my lastest 1,8t lump.

Wow chaps, what an utterly fantastic response that I really did not expect. My earlier reply was as I queued to pay for some shopping so was a little rushed, My error, I of course meant that I required a Longitudinal mounted engine, not transverse. The engine code i need is the AEB engine. This from what i understand has the big valve head, external water pump and a cable throttle. I also thing that the oil pump is in a different location. All these things are quite important as the transmission tunnel is very narrow and from what i have researched the easiest engine to use for the conversion is the AEB. Thank you all very much to everyone who has replied, you have saved me from potentially buying a donor car that is unsuitable which is fantastic. The search continues, hopefully i have included a photo of the conversion that may hopefully come together one day.

The BEX code engine is the AMK/BAM equivalent but as said before the rods are weak.

The valve sizes are all the same.(and the exhaist valves like to fall apart when they get old) The larger ports are the inlet manifold ports. However don't get hung up on this as the small port head yeilds slightly better low down torque and is only restrictive on and around 500bhp. Also the aeb has the cast crank. Whats your horse power goal? 300,400,500,800? Aeb will be a cable throttle which is a narrow band ecu. A completly waste of time. Fit an electronic throttle.and wide band me7.5 ecu. Very simple to get working on a factory ecu along with factory obd port diagnostics. Vagtronics in stoke will modify the loom to make it plug and play with just 5 wires to connect and unlock the ecu. water pump wise i cant see what you will gain using the shaft external one. If you want a dummy mock up block and head I have one that I used when making my spaceframed race car. Your more than welcome to borrow it. I can be as much help as you need as ive come across alsorts building and racing these engines making them fit to various gearboxes etc(nissan 350z box with a landrover lt230 transfer box to make 4wd and longitudinally mounted) sequential gearbox, etc.
