No, not why every dodgy mini-cab has one... More the process. So NI has it's own version of DVLA, right? And so you fetch an NI reg'd car over here and you need to re-register it with DVLA, correct so far? But then the DVLA register it on the old NI number, which is then 'transferrable' within the main UK system? Is this how it works - seems utterly bonkers to me! (There is a reason behind these daft question. ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) )

Was always led to believe you can drive on as normal, continuing to Tax/MOT as usual. Our version is DVLNI, soon to move to Swansea anyway. Considering buying a car from this terrible, Guinness slurping land?

NI numbers exist as per normal but relate to the county - I used to have MIW xxxx which was Co. Derry.
You can keep them in the rest of the UK if you have one.
Basically, re-tax your car in NI and they will give you the option of a new reg (which can be re-sold). You'll get new docs but nothing else changes.

An old work mate of mine was from Dublin and moved to the UK, after a few years of driving old bangers he and his wife decided to buy a nice new(ish) car and settled for an Audi A4 with NI reg plates. His wife was pulled over one day by the local plod about her brake lights not working (both bulbs blown) and she was quite polite with the officer until he commented about the car having NI plates and wondered what part of NI she was from ;D ;D ;D.She was not happy and still is bitter to this day.

pogstar, i beleive you to be 100% correct with your above assumptions. thats how it works going this way, with the choice of a new NI number or keeping the old english one. the DVLA and DVLNI are still seperate, but not for much longer. if you wait until after mid next year the idea is you wont have to re-register as everything here goes to swansea then.

Cars that are are NI plates still reg'd in NI are quite handy. As the current system stands DVLA GB have no limited access to DVLA NI, the plod also have no access to the NI system ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) However you transfer a NI car to GB & retain the number, which is transferable - at this point they suddenly become Baz's private number plate ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)
