I have a Sprinter Camper van 55 plate 311 2.2 Ltr Diesel. Although I have not used it much this year for obvious reasons I try and start it every few weeks and take it for a run, It starts on the button every time first turn of the Key. It started Christmas eve no problem did not drive it as its on Sorn but moved it up and down the drive again no problem was running sweet. Went out to start it today and it kept turning over but eventually started, once started it run fine and ticked over as normal. I then stopped it after about 20 mins and i will not start again, turns over fine/quick but no hint of it starting. I did a quick check on the connections on the ECU and used my spare key but no luck. I remember having a similar problem in work about 15 years ago with a Sprinter it would only restart if we squirted quick start in it...again once started running fine, I cant remember what the fault was. Any Diesel fitters of Sprinter experts please ?

rear of the head is the diesel pressure sensor? these often fail on the seal and cause this problem, you will find it will start if you squirt wd into the intake as in the previous sprinter,it will also start immediately with a tug,and will then start all day until the following morning when it needs to be done again, you can buy ther seal seperately, and change it,sensor is a curse word to get to though, its mostly by feel to get to it,although you can see it just with a mirror on a stick

Many thanks really appreciate your advice, I have heard about the seal, (not looked for it yet) but once i stopped the engine after 20 mins it refuses to start again and it was nice and warm, could this still be the seal ?

I'll second it being the pressure sensor seal. Most of the time the o ring has split.

That looks like it, if your stuck any o ring of the correct size will get you out of trouble for a while.

Unfortunately the new O rings didn't do the job, ( the old seals looked ok as well ) still fails to start, not sure of the next move might try someone with a fault code reader ?

Have you tried a bit of easy start in it?
They need a high fuel pressure to start. Only time mine has had starting issues was when warm. Started perfect from cold but if you turned off when it was warm it wouldn't start until it had cooled down. this wasa leaking injector.
The easiest way would be getting it read for codes, although i think they are a bit picky with what can read them.

Started Christmas eve no problem,
It started just after Christmas after a lot of turns (Usually starts first time) and ran great, but once I stopped it, it would not start and has not started since....
I know of a chap who has readers etc i think he is mt next call.

Does it have the clear fuel lines - can you see fuel or big air bubbles? Could be an air leak into the fuel letting fuel drain back the tank. Plenty of people have problems with fuel filter causing issues.
Atleast if you can get it to fire on easy start, you know its probably fuel related. ie leaky injector/injectors, leaky pipe/fuel filter etc.
With you saying it took lots of cranking before starting, but ran fine - it sounds fuel pressure related to me.

Yes I agree, i was hoping the new O rings would have sorted it... I'm trying to contact the chap with the code readers, problem is this damn covid is not helping either... I will also get some easy start and fire some of that into the Air intake.

Does it have a electric lift pump, if they fail they cause similar symptoms, you can usually hear them running through the filler neck, fuse is an easy first place to check.
Go carefull on the easy start I know of an outfit that bent a number of con rods running diesels up on easy start to pull the fuel through.

Its has two mechanical Pump one low one high pressure I believe... yes i am a bit worried on using easy start on a diesel. I'm waiting to see what the chap with the code readers come up with.

don't use easy start.
Brake cleaner is kinder to engines, or you can also use anti perspirant.

nothing wrong with a sniff of easy start, best done with an assistant to spray in once the engine has started turning over, then you wont get the harsh bang from flooding one cylinder, you'll get the same from any flammable liquid you spray in.

The odd use isnt going to do any damage - constant use yes maybe or if you are a moron and spray half a can in the thing.
Anything flammable will work, use brake cleaner if you wish - It would still be my next step either way.

Did you get this sorted? Been down this road before along with many others, you need to do a leak off test, although the 611 wasnt as bad as the 646 for injectors your description has all the characteristics of leaky injectors, failing that where are you, Ive got a star diag and know plenty of others up and down how have them too
