I need it to get to work tomorrow, tried half a dozen times online and just get this message We have one post office open in liverpool but they do not do car tax. Rang dvla, 5 minutes of instructions and choose a number between 1-4 only to then be told they are shut until 8am tomorrow, I need to be in work at 7am. Would I be able to defend myself by saying I have tried to tax it but am unable and show the message ?. Bought it a few days ago.

Just put the documents in your car along with whatever payment method you intend to use & go to the Post Office at some point during the day to tax it. If you got pulled I cannot imagine any copper would nick you if show them the docs

Try again tomorrow morning, failing that you can call 0300 790 6802 to tax over the phone (assuming they're open).

What happens if you click the last link, 'how to tax after SORN'? I'd think any sensible copper would be understanding...assuming that is their only reason for stopping you!

Thanks everyone, I have used the links every which way, tried to sorn it, tax it, I think due to the holidays it has not been updated internally by dvla. I think the police would give me leeway, I have had a thought, I do not know where the static anpr cameras are in Liverpool, no leeway from them. Probably all I can do is give my wife £25 for taxis as she has a hospital appointment tomorrow then use her car.

If you were anpr'd or stopped they would report to the DVLA. If you get it taxed soonest nothing will happen. No VED is not an offence the police deal with its a DVLA issue only. As long as your car is MOT and insured you'll have no issue, take the papers along with you but just get the car taxed soonest.

not being insulting but you are using the green slip V5C/2 doc ref number and not the front page one, when the DVLA asks if you have the log book you say NO then enter the ref number from slip.

I hate these websites. They just seem to send you round in a never ending loop. I have had this so many time when I have tried to do things. 'Enter your passport number' Don't have a passport. 'Click here if you do not have a passport' click 'Enter your passport number' DUH!!!!!!!!! It's the same here. 'Enter the long number on the V5' Don't have the V5 'If you don't have the V5, click here' click 'Enter the long number on the V5' Computer now goes out the window.

All I have is the green slip and I have done this many times before, I have a vague memory of something similar from the past, despite the message that they know I am the new owner, the details get stuck in limbo at the dvla.

if the previous owner has sorned it you wont be able to tax it online until 5 days have past since they sorned it but can be done at a post office or if you can get through on the phone

The ironic thing is that once you tax it it goes from the beginning of the month. They're quick enough to stop the tax. Its about time the taxing of cars was changed from when you want to tax it.

I would just drive it, get it taxed when their system is working or you can get somewhere with it all. Of the 4 driving sins* tax is the least important, the DVLA/Police tend to give leniency up to 15 days to give people a chance to get to the post office or in touch with the DVLA in my dealings with them/experience. You will be fine i'm sure but if not send them my way and i'll have a word.......

I drove home 4 hours from Newcastle to The Wirral in December with my new car declared as Sorn.
Tried multiple times to tax online before I left the chaps house but the website was either timing out or giving me an error when I entered the new keeper code.
Just went to the post office the next day who sorted it within 2 minutes.

Found a post office today that I could get the truck parked near, we are taxed 😁, had to use my wife’s car today, she charged me £20, in fairness she had a hospital appointment and had to get a taxi.
