i painted the rear of my mini 8 days ago, its white 2k paint . I mixed it 2-1, and added some 2k thinners. Now i got a few silicones in it, so today i started to flat it down. Using a DS it was clogging with a 320 disc and some times sticking?!Then i uses some 800 wet and dry and it flattened ok, but when i put my finger on the surface it was like the paint was still soft, and the side i painted yesterday i had put my hand on that and the paint was still soft on that too.
i left it 10 mins between coats, and for the first few mins after painting it i used a heat gun to get some warmth into it.
I'm guessing ive done something wrong again... thanks

Did you use hardener?

I had this happen with a batch of panels on my Rover. I can only assume I didn't add hardener. I had to strip the paint from the panels and re-do them again. Getting the paint off was a real curse word too, as it clogged 80 grit paper... The same tin of paint was fine every other batch of panels I sprayed

defo had the hardener in it!
i just checked the engine bay i painted first, that is defo harder than the rest of it, but if you put your finger nail in it, and pull hard, it comes off. i don't know if that is right or what? its been on there for a week.
its not too warm at the moment, I'm wondering if i put the heater on in there and get it all hot if it will work.

It should have gone off by now as it's a chemical reaction, hear will speed it up but cold won't stop it.
You did use activator with the hardener?

as in rocket? no. this si what i used as in 150 ml paint, 75 hardener, and 10% thinners. i just checked the engine bay, its a lot harder than the other paint, but its still 10 days old, i can pull it off if i try hard with my finger nail. Just seems really strange it isnt going off in a day or so. But now thinkign of it the first time i painted the engine bay, it seemed soft, and i had forgotten about that, and then it was hard maybe 1 year later. but does seem strange.

Hmmmm.......does not sound right. How much paint did you put on? - how many coats? were they heavy coats?
It 'should' be properly dry by now (though we have had some cold weather) but it may be a little soft if you dig a fingernail in it. It should not be soft if you press a finger on it.
2K needs 15 degrees or higher to set properly, if it's been consistently lower than that it may not have set properly yet. Put a heater on in the garage for a few hours to get it hot in there.
You should not be DA'ing the paint (unless you are trying to remove it) if you are trying to flat & polish then wet & dry 1000 grit is where you should start.
Stick some photos up.

i did one light spray type coat to make the stuff stick, then i did 3 coats, they where to be fair quite heavy coats, like i thought it was going to run type heavy but it didnt. Left about 10 mins between coats and for 2 mins after i blew over it with a heat gun.
Its defo not been over 15 degs in the garage for a long time.
In the rear of the car i got a few silicones, so i was hoping to flat the paint and paint over it tomorrow. wet and dry was ok but it was soft under it, but seemed to set fairly quick.
to be fiar the side looks absolutely mint considering i painted it ina dusty garage.
should i be using rocket in it too?
i thought if i just left the paint it would go off in a few days even with out heat, maybe this is the problem?
thanks again mate!

Rocket would have helped. I've not used it yet, but it does make it set super quick. It's ideal for cold weather painting.
You probably have put a bit too much paint on which will have made the issue worse, but it's not the end of the world.
Cook it - that should harden it off. Tape up gaps in garage or wedge some old towels etc around doors and put a couple of fan heaters in there for a few hours. Get it up to around 20 degrees (do it during day as easier to get to temps) and keep it there for 2-3 hours.
If you do try rocket - try a test mix first as it really can make it set fast.
Paint looks good though.

From Memory of my paint spraying days rocket has a time of 30 min before it sets in the gun like jelly as a starting point. I used to spray the job, dump the waste chuck the gun in thinners / gun wash bucket ASAP... then go for a break..
Deffo wet flat on fresh paint, regardless of type (2k and celly) .

right had another feel of it today and its defo going off, i have flatted the rear valance with wet and dry, adn they went ok. Maybe when i was rubbing it with the DA it heated it up and softened it too, not sure. Ive got the oil heater on now, ill leave it on until tomorrow, and it should get nice and hot in there.
I'm just glad its not all going to have to come off again, its been a lot of learning this painting stuff ! thankyou for the help!

What Mark said, it needs cooking. I pre-heat with 4 2kW fan heaters and a 2kW convector, it's like a sauna and goes off in 20 minutes or so.

this is still weird! Painted the o/s first, and the garage has had the heater on a few times now. the outside of the paint was hard, but ive wet flatted it to paint over it. Now, again the paint underneath is soft! but the outer is hard. I painted the front of the car yesterday with a different hardener, that is now hard.
what shall i do? ive painted the inside, rear and both sides with one type of hardner, and the front with another. Engine bay is hard and so is inside.
thanks

Well....maybe......the hardener was out of date? Is it an issue?
Front will flat out fine, use loads of water - ideally water running over panels as you sand (hose trickling will do). Otherwise a two bucket system. One to rinse paper and one to dip for clean water to sand.
Start with 1000 grit and work up to 1500/2000 before starting to polish. Take your time and do one panel at a time. Wipe down and air dry regularly and as soon as all the imperfections have gone you are done.
