1986 Peugeot 205 1.6 Automatic
55k miles from new
MOT Until June 2021
I have owned this little 205 for just over a year now, and in that time it has had an extensive amount of work to get it up to scratch. Work undertaken includes:
- new cam belt
- oil and filter change, plus transmission flush and new fluid
- rebuilt brake system including: master cylinder, discs, pads, all flexi-hoses, rear shoes and cylinders
- rear wheel bearings cleaned, inspected and repacked with fresh grease and new seals
- carburettor rebuild
- rebuilt distributor with new rotor arm, cap, vacuum advance capsule and new HT leads
- rear beam removed from the car, inspected and clean, plus new dampers fitted and mounting bushes
- underside of the car fully cleaned, treated and undersealed with Dinitrol
- new radiator, thermostat and fresh coolant
- fully refurbished pepper pot alloys and 4x Falken Tyres
The above list is by no means exhaustive, lots of other jobs have been done to get this up to scratch to use as a reliable daily classic. I have put approximately 2,000 miles on it since completing the majority of the work and it has performed flawlessly.
The car is a very honest example of a Phase 1 205. It is extremely solid underneath, with no rust in any of the usual 205 places and it has never been welded. I have extensively cleaned, treated and undersealed the car so it should remain solid for many years to come. There are a few parking dents and chips on the paintwork, the worst of which is on the rear passenger door. It appears to have had some re-spray work done in the past and there are some blemishes and a few mismatches here and there but it cleans up very well indeed. The passenger front door looks to be a replacement and is showing signs of rust on the underside edge, its not gone through but will need to be attended to soon.
The interior is clean, straight and complete and everything works as it should, except: the clock, which is permanently stuck at 6:30, and the speedo needle wobbles a bit while driving – which is probably just a tired cable. There is a bit of fraying to the drivers seat bolster, but I have seen far worse before. There is some sun fading to the tops of the seats, parcel shelf and some of the blue plastic trim.
The engine is smooth and pulls well, the auto box shifts smoothly and goes through all the gears. I have driven a number of older automatics and this one knocks spots off the rest, the 2 stage kick down and 4 speeds mean its far from sluggish and yet will happily sit at 70mph on the motorway all day without deafening you.
The notorious autochoke on the carburettor can be temperamental, particularly after it has sat hot for a while. However it always starts and when running is very happy and will return 35-40mpg on a run. I have a spare Weber 36 TLP, which is the manual choke version of the same carburettor currently fitted, and this will be included in the sale – I have only not fitted it myself as I have lost my workshop space. I also have a few 205 spares, including a set of mud-flaps, which will also be included.
All in all, this is a lovely little useable classic and would serve someone very well. I am only selling it due to a relationship breakdown and consequent loss of storage.
