I have far too many of these items - Tools that I needed to get me out of an awkward situation, but have no use elsewhere. The Ryobi right angled drill. Snapped a manifold stud and to rectify would mean pulling out the AC pump, which needs a special tool to slacken the drive belt, along with all the other things that need doing when any AC part is removed. This stud was going to be a huge P I T A. All I needed was to drill a small hole for my stud extractor - This drill was used once and for 50 quid it beat the cost of the alternative. Used once and been gathering dust since. We should have some kind of 'used once toolswap' - What tools you got which were needed at the time, but now gather dust?

Years ago when I was a pipefitter one of my workmates had loads of tools he only used once. He would only ever buy the cheapest tools that money could buy from shops like poundland and market stalls. They would often break the first time he used them, then he would go back to poundland or whatever and buy another one. I remember one time pointing out to him that he had broken more £1.99 market stall pipe cutters than it had cost me to buy my single Ridgid pipe cutter which I'd used for years. So after much complaining about the price of one Ridgid pipe cutter he invested in one. From the moment he bought it he was moaning about the price. To be fair to him it probably cost him more than the rest of his tool kit put together. Anyhoo, incredibly despite costing him so much money he only used that one once too. He was 10ft or so up a ladder cutting a piece of copper tube, and as it cut through it the cutters slipped out of his hand... Straight down an open pipe that lead to the drain. The best bit was the pipe was reduced to only 2" diameter so the cutters only just fit with millimeters to spare, but they never even touched the sides! Needless to say that as we were four floors up he never saw them again. I'm just glad that I was there to see it happen, I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. That was probably the best part of twenty years ago and my guess is that he's probably still moaning about it now! Obviously he went straight back to buying cheap nasty tools and replacing them pretty much on a weekly basis.

Injector removal tool for Ford TDCi engines. Aren't they those injectors that cost a grand for a new set from ford, and then for reasons I can't understand, you need to program them to the car?

Yes they are, I get them from PFJones, they're £90 each and the software to code them is free. The coding is unique to the performance of the injector so it tells the ecu the precise amount of fuel to inject.

What is their issue with taking a product, an injector and putting a computer in it? Fuel is normally calculated by the ECU and how long injector is open. Ford. The same company that took a perfectly useable and reliable component, the battery terminal, and change it for one that tries to use a cam, fails miserably & never tightens. Their woeful intelligent charging system on mk2 focus. Silver oxide battery only. Battery gets zapped with a higher voltage at start. Destroys normal batteries within months, impossible to diagnose problems. MyFordTouch touchscreen stereo. Hideous system that causes drivers to crash. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MyFord_TouchIf it aint broke don't fix it!

£30 on a pair of knipex needle nose pliers (the Jaws are smooth) for straightening bent pins on multipin connectors before you can remove the pin to replace. After a speight of bent pins (busy festival season) used once. Not had a bent pin since. Bought 2 years ago.

Bought and never used.. A now ex-mate bought an early Jaguar XK8 with timing chain rattle. We agreed that I would do the job and that he would pay for the tools which I would keep in payment. Next time I see him he arrives to show off his latest purchase, bought after chopping in the Jag..

Fuel is normally calculated by the ECU and how long injector is open. its not ford, its Delphi siemens or bosch engine management, the coding thing is pretty commonplace for the past 20 years, most will run just fine, but to get accurate clean burn and meet emissions standards then the fine degree of control offered must be usedm

I bought a slide hammer for removing a blind bearing in the Midas' transfer case. Did that, and it's sat in its box since. Amusingly I could have simply used my blowtorch to heat the casing and "slapped" the casing down on some soft wood to shock it out, but I didn't read about that until I'd got the slide hammer...

I personally think it's pretty useful that a £10 diagnostic cable and free software lets you diagnose running issues and code in injectors, quicker than stripping and rebuilding a carb. I love retro cars but modern engines in them are great.

A pentagon socket for removal of Peugeot 205 brake calipers if I remember correctly, the replacements came with hex bolts so it's been in the tool box for at least 5 years.

K series cam locking tool. Did the job, and now the car it was used on is dead (that is to say, the owner after me scrapped the car instead of replacing/repairing the gearbox when it failed, the engine was still perfectly fine). Still have the tool, doubt I'll have another k-series car. Tool sits in the drawer, just in case.

These bl00dy things. I bought them about 30 years ago to get the coils/springs of my Citroen Visa. one of the things came of and the spring/coil hit me in the face. I was wearing and in anger I kicked a big dent in the door of my Visa. I finished the job and threw them in the pond right next to our house . I swore never to use these things ever again. Injury was luckily minimal
