My girlfreind has managed to crash her 1999 micra, only passed7 months ago, wrong lane on a roundabout - her fault - damage is wing, headlight bracket and washer bottle - i can fix in a hour. Other chaps car is a 2002 audi worth £500 now has a dented and scraped door and wing - seems a nice enough guy offered him £300 if he doesn't want to claim, which i was in his shoes would snap up. But if he does want to claim, is it worthwhile trying to get some money in leu to repair her car or just say no damage that we want to claim for, she wont want to lose her car. Will it make a difference come renewal time.

If either tries to claim, they’ll write the cars off for £500 a piece, your GF loses her first year of crucial NCB - and they cancel her policy (and if it’s on instalments she still needs to pay the rest of it).
The guy she hit should know this - but he will probably use the low class of write off (used to be D) to buy it back and and be back on the road without doing a thing but £500 in his pocket.
And yes - it will already make a difference come renewal as you have to declare an accident irrespective of whether or not you claimed (or the TP did). The value of the claim may have some effect but a “fault” accident will count. Had this for the 3/5 years after I’d had an accident (hit a wild animal in Germany) in the company car. That took some explaining - and in my case some insurers thought it way my fault, and others put it as “non-fault, no TP” - which I assume means you can’t claim costs off a wild animal..

Why will they cancel her policy? As far as i can found out they are expected to carry on cover unless its a exceptionally high risk or you cant find an appropriate replacement car.
Sucks for them both.
Hoping she can keep her car. When i rear ended someone in my sprinter i didnt claim for my van as all i had was a bent number plate, no inspections or questions.
Not sure whether to say the same thing or attempt to claim for it but keep it.

Unless it’s changed (been a while since I had a total loss claim) then if they decide the Micra is a total loss (cost of repairs exceeds value) then the policy is “spent” once they pay out on it.

I think its changed mate.
She has gone through the insurance, but not claiming for her car, not worth the aggro, £200 excess and risk of losing a good little car, its hard to find a decent low price automatic.
Fixed washer bottle, pulled wing out and secured headlight and its fine. That wing was the worse panel on the car being a pattern part not painted a good matching shade, will look out for a secondhand genuine wing in the right colour.
