Who has a 70's Beetle as a daily driver? Fallen out of love with my Mk2 golf so it's up for sale.
I've wanted a Beetle for about 20 years and as I've now realised it's my only chance of owning something aircooled designed by a Mr Porsche.
Now I used to daily my 924 which is a 77 but a bit more rapid than a 1600 bug so just wanted someone to pat me on the back and tell me it will all be OK!

There’s a big step backwards going from a MK2 Golf & 924 , even one made in ‘77 . I’ve daily’d MK2 Golfs , 944 & my current ‘68 bug .
As long as it’s mechanically sound , you’ll be fine . Although it’s slower , more noise & more mechanical to drive .
Just as any old car , look after it & it’ll look after you .
Edit to add , if you haven’t already , get a drive in one . Definitely an acquired driving experience

What's wrong with the mk2? I think that's a great older car, fun to drive, loads of spares, civilised.

Not really a car to enjoy on the motorway 1500/1600 gearbox ones are a lot more comfy on motorways. Mine sits comfortably at 60-65. Not going to compete with a modern car, but it's as capable as it's competitors (I'd say my '66 Beetle is more comfortable than my '64 Morris Minor at those speeds...)

Yep , my 1500 gearboxed 1600 sat at 65 mph fine . Dropped a couple of side wall sizes recently & is still happy at 60 mph . That’s GPS speed , not speedo speed .

I used to daily a type 3, but was a larger displacement at 1776, some performance mods and a "freeway flier" gearbox. I had no problems, but I also looked after it and kept on top of maintenance, replaced the loom, etc. It was my first experience as a driver or passenger of a air-cooled vw. It was only a few years later that I got a few rides in a beetle and realized how much more tiny and basic they seemed.
I'd daily a t3 again, but would probably be wary of dailing a beetle. Would reccomend you drive a few first.

My 1st cars were mk2 Golfs and Sciroccos and a mk1 Polo, I bought this for nostalgia and having owned it for a couple of years and had it as a daily I'm just bored of it, the magic isn't really there. It looks cool and is reliable but I don't love it. I've liked beetles since school in the early 90's but never ended up owning one so perhaps this is my midlife crisis.

I love the simplicity of the beetle and the scope of what can be done with one. I have a van for work and my wife has a brand new s6 for motorways and sensible stuff. A daily for me is going to the shops etc. Basically my 924 is totally finished, our house is finished and I need something to do!

Definitely try & get a drive in one , but i like mine . 👍

This was my daily about five or six years ago. I really couldn't fault it, drove it all through the winter and in all conditions and it never let me down. Excellent car! For contrast this was my daily two years ago. Again pretty good and I couldn't really fault it. I'd have either again.

They do seem to be very expensive but I suppose another way of looking at that is that they at least hold their value.

A few years ago I used my Wizard Roadster for my 22 mile commute between April and October and then bought something cheap to get me through the colder months,as it had no heating or any useful way of keeping the screen demisted! I loved it and it certainly cheered up an otherwise dull journey.I also always carried a couple of spanners, some gaffer tape and a hammer,as most jobs on that car could be tackled at the roadside with either. Like-minded people also stop to help a stricken old VW.

We used to daily a 1302 convertible in summer. 1600 engine is enough, especially if youre over 40 years old. Simple to look after, just keep the rust at bay and buy the best one you can affort.

It’s been a while since I had a beetle. I was never worried about only having a 1300, would be harder work if you spent a lot of time on a motorway. But as you’ve said you won’t be using it for that anyway. I’d probably put a stroker engine it over time anyway. I think I’d find the rubbish heater would make it hard work if I tried to run it all year, but then I’d probably just fit a parking heater (like Glen has just done in his old Land Rover) could even warm it up before leaving the house, and less worry of getting a gassing with exhaust fumes. Other than that, if it was pretty stock it’d be great all year round, but a bit of lowering wouldn’t matter

I ran my 1300 as a daily for 4 years while i was at uni. A 1600 would be better if you're doing motorway runs a lot but even a 1200 or 1300 will sit at 60+ quite happily.
