Fact is that over hyped cars which where snapped up for investment reason (Porsche 911 G models, 300SL etc.) will return slowly to the (high) level which they deserve but not the hype investor prices. Beside that I believe that most people love where they can connect with which would mean with the old (original) generation of collectors slowly scaling down their collections of pre-war cars where the (except the very special or rare items)due to increasing supply prices should decrease a bit. Beside that also the people believing they have gold and asking fat prices (for often modest quality) will hopefully finally get sick of sitting on it and will correct accordingly. So I think a healthy correction but nothing to worry about for the realistic real enthusiast. As long as the green lobby does not completely forbid to drive them ;-).

I'd sure love it if Rover P6s would go down to £1500-£2000 again. They seem to have quadrupled in value in five years.

From my point of view, the oldest stuff (certainly most pre 50's) will at some point hit my generation as we get older and I have next to no interest in most of them, even at 1% of their current values.

. . . people may remember how easy and cheap pre-computer cars were to fix and maintain. Also if you leave your mobile phone and sat-nav at home MI5 can't track you as easily!

On a personal level, I'd have no problem if the market crashed. Imagine what us lot could get up to if loads of mint old cars were suddenly within our reach... Complete agree, and even better, it would give the youngsters a fair chance of buying something cool and modifying it to their hearts' content.

The flip side of that is, if the values crash to that extent, id expect to see more 'I cant believe that 1940/50/60's luxury saloon car is getting b@ngered' With events of all sorts being cancelled, it could lead to stockpiling, and next year could see meetings being awash with these sorts of motors that no one wants.

Most people have no space to stockpile cars I'm afraid.

Although I'm generally incompetent when it comes to working on any of my cars, I've never seen them as investments. Actually quite the opposite - I expect anything I do to them will very likely cause them to depreciate, such is the lack of my restoration knowledge. But for me, that's the point. They're not a valuable asset to me monetarily, but instead are valuable in terms of me gaining skills, having a hobby and spending time driving cars that make me feel good.
My only concern with a crash in the market is the availability of parts, as others have said. I already find it very difficult to find certain bits, and a crash would likely make things that much harder. Having said that, I don't see a crash of such significance actually happening. Things have a way of balancing out.

For that exact reason I would also be happy to move on to something else if working on or driving cars would no longer be possible for whatever reason. Fortunately I'm an omnivore, there's so much interesting stuff to mess with!

This discussion seems to based on the presupposition that there will be loads of hungry buyers out there, prowling for the big bargain. Most of us are going to be affected by this virus situation, people are going to be VERY reluctant to spend money on cars, bargains or not. We simply do not know, as yet, where this is all heading. Once it is over, life will return back to a different kind of normal and the values of classics that had crashed during the crisis will return to normal. I think liquidating assets may be the last thing people will want to do.

Ive been thinking about buying a fast ford mainly for the deprecation proof motoring, With whats going on in the world at the moment and talk of anther recession looming do we think the value of classics are about to crash? Lets keep this about cars and not what we already know about on the news. What Ford and what sort of use?

one thing you'll notice is the poster cars of kids gain value when the kids can afford them , there is a pattern
if there becomes a point when the people can never afford them , then it gets stale

If I owned a "Jay Leno" bunch of wheels,I'd be bricking it but as my vehicular love is a sub 10k yankee truck, I don't care what happens to values! I mean, if you married a rich woman and she somehow lost her fortune, would you divorce her?
