(Not the meowing kind, even worse!)
Came outside this morning to find my mx5 sounds like a drag racer, looked underneath and someone has cut the exhaust and removed the cat. Absolutely gutted. I am also worried about what kind of damaged may have been done by these scallys ?
Is it just a case of getting a new cat and fitting it?
Thanks

It’s a growing problem !
They use a pipe cutter to get it off !
On the new Toyota then can remove the down pipe and cut the rear pipe section in under a minute!
To the point that a well known exhaust supplier is stockpiling them for them

Not that I can offer much help here but this is all too common. This happens with vans a lot (at least here in London).
Get a sport cat or a standard cat plus cage around it if you decide to go that route (if they will come with a plasma cutter it will only slow them down tho).
Hate is not a very popular word these days but it is absolutely appropriate here. I hate the thieving scum!

That's unfair.
The place next to my work had the cats cut off their fleet of vans one night.

Had a Honda jazz come Into work with a stolen cat. The cost of that plus 2 lambda sensors wrote the car off.

All the more reason to own a retro, no cat required According to this site, there’s 8 years worth (approx) of retro cars that need a cat.

All the more reason to own a Retro and slam it on air-ride so they can't get to the cat even if it has one! FTFY

How old is your MX5? If it's pre 92 or an import mk1 you wont need one, ours has been through 4 MOTS with a decat fitted.
How much are these old cats worth anyway? I've got two or three kicking around.

My 1996 106 Rallyé has went through every MOT in the last 7 years of my ownership with a peugeotsport group N exhaust and dummy cat. Never batted an eyelid at it in the test centres and our test centres over here are supposedly a little less lenient than the ones on the mainland UK

I've got two or three kicking around. ANY vehicle used after the cut-off for catalytic converters requires on unless- 1) they have a letter from the manufacturer stating the vehicle isn’t capable of meeting the emissions requirements required at the time of manufacture Or 2) the presenter has eveidence the engine has been replaced with a type that is catalyst emissions test exempt The ‘it’s an import mate’ loophole was killed years ago. All cars unless SPECIFICALLY exempt require one if they are of the appropriate age.

How much are these old cats worth anyway? I've got two or three kicking around. I see a lot of adverts on FB marketplace offering to buy cats, they never put a price but instead ask you to send the codes on it. The whole market in cats seems super dodgy, lots of buyers and sellers with new accounts and only mobile numbers for contact and "will come to you" so it's all untraceable. No wonder they are always getting nicked. Of course if you've got some legitimate ones that you own, you may as well sell them on, I can't immediately think how it would not be alright for you to do so? If the buyer is a scrap dealer and not operating according to the know your customer rules then they could potentially be committing an offence (although you wouldn't be as far as I can tell). Better to sell to a legitimate scrap dealer though - legitimate dealers have to check your identity and cannot pay cash. Sorry to hear it happened to you beefcake.

Wasn't aware of this particular niche crime.
Sound's like it's a problem over there?
