Hi, I do 45 motorway miles a day to get to and from work.
I'm looking for something that will be very efficient say 50mpg upwards and reliable. I have no shame as long as it's cheap to run.
It's just for me so ideally something small, a decent long mot and in/near the north west.
Budget 1k absolute max preferably 750
Thanks
Pete

The only thing I've ever achieved that sort of fuel economy on was a motorbike.

I used to get 50 mpg all day, with "brisk" driving, in my mk6 tdi 140 Golf. So it's achievable. I'd suggest a 1.4 hdi Pug 308, a 1.9 tdi VAG / Skoda, or a Mitsubishi Lancer diesel.

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

My work car is a corsa 1.3 diesel. Easy over 50mpg
Horrible cars though.

Most diesels up to about 2.0 will do this so wide choice. Hell, I get that out of a 2.4 Volvo driven gently. (60 mile round trip daily, Volvo S60)
Would avoid the scene tax of VW, but anything from VAG group up to Golf sort of size would be my choice.
Put your needs into Gumtree and see what grabs your eye?

I used to own a Vauxhall Vectra (Cavalier mk3) with a 1.7 diesel. The non turbo kind.
This would easily get over 50mpg.
Never missed a beat either.
I'd recommend looking for a genuine Opel/Vauxhall engine, the Isuzu ones aren't that robust in my experience!

It's that thread that get my looking for a new car. Apologies I didn't realise this was a wanted advert - i thought you were looking for suggestions like Luke was in the other thread.

I drive a 2003 Fabia VRS which is a Polo underneath and get 50-60mpg on my 48 mile each way commute.
Remapped to 170hp and 392nm so it shifts pretty well too. Just has a bit of a shoddy remap so it sometimes overboosts and goes in to limp mode -_-
I'm probably going to sell it once I can get a unit close to home and get back in my Volvo 940.

I've clocked up over 100k miles in a little 2010 panda 1.3mj (same engine in the diesel corsa) and have recorded, tank to tank, and average of 63.4mpg over that period with a high of 79mpg and my lowest being 53mpg.
And to boot they are great fun to drive.

vag 1.9 pd, get a 130 as the 100 is quite short geared, they will do 50-60 mpg but you will need to keep the speeds down on the lower power ones.

Bought a mighty lupo 1.7 sdi. £30 tax and hopefully 60mpg on the motorway should more than half my commuting costs.
It's very green, almost 1970s avocado bathroom suite green. But, "you get what you need" so say Mick Jagger
