A little bit stuck with the first halfshaft on my Capri. Apparently they're easy to get out but after pulling the four bolts out i cant get it to budge.
I havnet got a sliding hammer but i tried: - putting the wheel back on and hitting it with a rubber mallet on the steel. - Putting a disk rotor on and siding it back and forth against the wheel nuts (like a sliding hammer ) - same as above but with the wheel again.
Any tips? can i use penetrating oil on the half shaft? would that would? I could go and buy a heat gun but I'm trying to keep cost down as it might be diff bearings but want to try this first.

I would put a wheel back on and hit it with a lump hammer with a good piece of wood to stop any damage. if you do have a heat gun warm the end of the case up.:-)

Hit it inwards and they usually bounce out

I've had to give them a fair old with a slide hammer to get them out before, I think you will struggle with hitting the wheel it needs to be a sharp whack in line with the shaft.
Where are you? It might be someone can lend you a slide hammer.

Heavy ratchet straps or similar? Tie one end to the hub on the stuck shaft - tie other onto the biggest heaviest lump of metal you have ( I often used one end of an old prop shaft) then just swing the lump away from the car. Shaft should pop loose when the strap jerks tight.

Very useful bit of improvisation advice. ^^^Yep done that before, but tie a bit of something to the hub and axle to stop the shaft flying out at a rate of knots, smashing you in the shins and then bouncing the splined end all over the concrete mashing up the splines, ask me how I know......

If you can find a bit of chain the same principle would work even better.

And make sure the rest of the car is well supported, obviously 😱

Try your local hire shop for a suitable slide hammer

If you’ve got some lengths of studding it’s not difficult to cobble a slide hammer together

Tried this as a sliding hammer but No joy. I put some penetrating oil on it so will try again tomorrow. I'll also look at Tool Hire as I'm wondering if Machine Marts £40 slide hammer is too light at 2KG Got the car on two axle stands so all good.. Not supported by a bucket as it looks here

How good are machine mart at taking things back? I’ve never used them, but if you bought it and it won’t do the job take it back? I would think 2kg would be fine, you can get a fair old whack into that

I cobbled together some angle iron that bolts to the hub, with a length of bar through the middle. A large lump of steel , 4 kg ish to slide down it. Might have about a foot of travel - still occasionally takes a few goes to pull an Escort half-shaft out

You don't need a heat gun. A full kettle of boiling water poured over the bearing housing but not getting on the shaft will help. A FBH is also a must. I have an old wheel I use just for this purpose.

The kettle method along with a 2kg slide hammer will deffo work IMHO
