Morning I’m getting the itch to change my daily again! I’ve currently got a Seat Leon TDI which is the most boring car I’ve ever owned. At the moment the E28 5 Series has caught my eye again. I’ve never owned one but when I was an apprentice my boss had an M535i which I loved. He eventually scrapped it because it was rotten So, show me what you’ve got, what you like, what I might like etc etc. You all know the drill. Here’s a couple that I remembered used to live near me once upon a time

The important thng with any BMW of this age is that they rust. E28s are not actually that bad for it, but there will still be areas needing addressed on most of them, so bear that in mind. The common areas are well documented, and are all visible without too much poking around. The only thing that is really difficult to get is a rear bumper. Everything else is almost readily available, new or s/h. Good headlights and rear lights are getting scarce as well. Doors do rot but they have to be really bad before they become unusable. Other than that they have a great scope for modifying, there is lots of parts out there for them and compatibility from the E34 on some things too, and there isn't a single bad engine or transmission in them so any choice is a good choice. My M535i and I have been together for a while now.

Here’s ours. 518i with factory leather and dealer fitted M Tech kit. Was sold by Kinners Ashton, oldest BMW dealer in the UK (now part of Bowker group) and by accounts the first ‘M style specialists’ main dealer. If it floats your boat, we could be tempted to sell, I’ve been getting itchy feet for a while about maybe changing cars. It’s proper fuel injection and has been a proper turn-key car for us, never let us down once all the niggles of it being off the road for a few years had been sorted. It’s a very reliable willing little motor really it’s got different wheels now, is all.

PM me with an idea of how much you might want to part with it and we can see if we’re in the same ballpark haha.

My e28 520i auto. Now in bits. And should resemble something like this in the next year or so.

The 520i or 518i are probably best for a daily. I used my 520i auto as a daily for a couple of years and it never let me down but maintenance is a must. I had to weld up jacking points, rear subframe mounts and battery tray. Also watch out for sunroofs, front and rear scuttles, rear arches and rear panels which are prone to rot. Overall these cars are easy to work on and relatively cheap to run if you do your own maintenance.

My e28 520i auto. I was about to comment saying that's a lovely shade of green. As much as I love a race livery, I love that green more!

I walk to work so it would only get used at the weekends anyway. Love yours and love the green colour!

The 520i is the version I'd opt for. And if you don't mind paying for more juice a 528i Auto would be a nice weekend bus too. Have you considered an E34 as they have many advantages over the older E28?

Many moons ago I had a Lapis Blue 520i manual. I bought it off an old fella at the same time as I bought my first Benz, also off an old fella. The Benz was more me so the E28 went.

E28s are a properly good looking car. I'm off to eBay to see what's about. I'll wager there'll be none for the price of £150 that I paid for the one I mentioned earlier. 😃

I like E28's, but have a history with the earlier E12 models too... This is one of my favourites.
