I've been giving my old bus a bit of a freshen up over the last few weeks and thought I'd start a thread for it. I bought it in 2001 for the grand sum of £1900 ,it's one of the few things I've done that's actually been a great investment . It came before the oval ( this one) and way before the ghia ( this one). I got it when I'd just together with the (now) wife , I saw it for sale on the side on the road a few miles from where I lived. It's a 1972 Devon,so UK converted from a minibus (I think) .It was nice and original inside and out with a wheezy old 1600 .It came with an original awning and all the original sale books and manuals and a bunch of service records as well! I'll try and find some pics of it from then later. Here's a couple of pic from one of last year's bike trips to give you an idea what she's like .I'd just got a new bike so I was really taking photo of that ( nice retro 20 year old towel huh?? SWMBO wouldn't let me take one of the good towels on a bike trip ) I've had the bus so long I don't take too many pic of it anymore . Plenty more pics to come ......

That's beauty.
When did the Bus/Transporter get the Type 4 engine, and was it a meaningful improvement?
I will, look forward to more updates. Thanks, John

I'm not sure when the Type 4 was introduced and I've never drive a bay bus with one but I'd imagine it was a big improvement ...it deffo needs more poke . 2nd hills are a real chore. It's goes well enough most of the time but loaded up with gear on a hot day and it starts to get problematic, you need closely monitor the oil temps and slow down till it get to where you want to be .

That's beauty. When did the Bus/Transporter get the Type 4 engine, and was it a meaningful improvement? I will, look forward to more updates. Thanks, John From memory it was around '72 in the UK when they crossed over as per the OPs (nice bus by the way). Early Bays designated T1a went from the runout of the splitties in '67 to '72. Then as VW so often used to do, there was a crossover year around '72 where the rear end was updated to take the bigger engines (better rear lights and squared off cooling vents on the d pillars). From around '73 onwards through to the end of German production in '79/80 they changed to 'Late Bays' (i.e. T1b) which had much better crash protection at the front, higher front indicators and a number of improvements under the skin. I could be a little out with the dates but essentially that's what happened. Last one I had was a late panel van which is one of the only vehicles I regret selling.

It was certainly in by '76, and maybe as early as 1974. My 1970 Dormobile had a CU-code 2 litre from an early T25, and that went pretty well. Used to tow my drag bug and trailer about without a problem! After I wrote that off, I kept the engine and bought a T25 with a 2 litre already fitted. That also went reasonably well, although it was heavier. Did swap the other engine into it at some point, just in case it was a better engine, but it was pretty much the same. We've now got another T25, a Devon Moonraker that's been fitted with a fixed high top. It was originally a 1600 but now has another CU-code 2 litre in it. It's slower than ever, but that might be due to the 1600 gearbox not matching the power band of the engine. I've got a 2 litre gearbox to rebuild, but if that doesn't sort it, I've got most of the bits for a 2276 type 1 motor, which I reckon would work with type 3 tin. I'd like to go electric, but the wife won't have it!

Mines a 72 crossover , so 1600 donk, early front end (much nicer I think) and late rear with early bumpers. It means the front arches are a mixture which in turn means super expensive panels.....I'll get on to that ......I went the cheapskate route....

Thanks, John Hey, just to add to it. the type 4 engine was an option from 1972. much better engine, better oil lubrication and improvement over the type1/beetle engine. Even the curse word 1600 was more power 86bhp 1679cc. overall less stress. the better 2l one was offered in the T2/bay in 76 Better engine but more expensive to modify and replace parts. T1 engine cheaper to make power these days.

I got this in 2001 . It solid ish but looked a bit rough .the front was covered in light rusty stone chips and the battery tray needed doing , the arches needed a bit of work and the engine was passed it's best . It was good enough to use though and we headed for Cornwall This was at Fistral beach before it was developed . Here's the cool old awning that came with ,sadly the Zips all failed and it became to rough to use and it got replaced with a generic JK one . I went to a couple of shows in it that year as well. More to come

After a year or so though it deserved a freshen up (about 2003). A pal of mine was working in a body shop and agreed to paint it if I did all the prep . It need a couple of bit of welding- battery tray, arch lips and a couple of floor patches . I rubbed it all down and got it painted . I though I'd go for a bit of a german look so bought a set of repro Porsche cups for it and lowered it a bit . In hindsight they were a bad idea .the tyre profile was way too small and it drove dreadfully used more fuel and was super heavy on the steering but I was young (ish) and didn't care about those kind of things !!! It looked quite cool I think.....for the early 2000's anyway !!

The old tired 1600 got swapped out for a recon with a twin prog webber . I drove it like that for 10 or so years with very little going wrong or needing doing . Me and the missus took it to the south of France for a couple of weeks We took it to Northern Ireland for a couple of weeks and countless VW shows at Santa Pod and Avon Park We even used it for our wedding in 2012

I used the van a bit over the next few years but it stayed in the barn for months at the time and around 2015 didn't get used at all.. When it needed yet another set of those stupid low profile tyres I decide to get rid of them and go back to the original 14" steels and fatty van tyres ......wow !! I'd forgotten how nice it drove before I ruined it with those wheels !! it was considerably faster, noticeably better on fuel and the steering was transformed. When our little boy was about 3 (a couple of years ago) he really started loving going in the van so it started getting a lot more use and I started mountain biking a lot more so it got used for bike trips as well . It ended up staying out side a lot more which had a big effect on the rust . The drivers front wheel arch looked dreadful and there were a few other bits that made it look rough. The lower screen surround has gone and leaks water into the cab ....Folks even started saying it was looking rough !!! I'm not having that !! So about 2 months ago I decided to give it some love . It's tuned out to be much worse than I thought ...........

Liked for empathy, not because your bus is rusty! Looking forward to seeing it shiny again Likewise! I've always found the 14s to be a bit floaty. I didn't do anything with my bay before I wrote it off, but I did put 15" Audi Ronals on my T25, and it was a nicer drive. I've mentioned to Em about going for 15" steelies off a T4 for her T25. She said she doesn't care as long as she can put her hubcaps on...

I've never been a huge fan of old air cooled VWs, maybe because I have an old Mini and its a bit like Mods and Rockers isn't it? As I've gotten older though, I'm really starting to get an itch for one. It could be that I've got a T5.1 as my daily now and I'm loving the ease of customisation and the 'scene' if that isn't too gross a term... I think out of all of them the early bay face is my fave - the low level indicators and early bumpers just seem to make it look awesome in my eyes. I've also got a weird obsession with the font of the Volkswagon badge on yours, could you do me a close up picture? I want to have some side graphics for my T5 made up in that font Looking forward to updates

I decide to tackle the drivers side wheel arch first . The replacement panel was a genuine VW one . First a tried to unbolt the seat belt as it right next to the arch. I've been strapping myself to that for years . You can see it's already been plated before , must have been done years ago ....I've had it 20 years. Check out the sticker next to it I might add a "does not" to that with a sharpie. There's a strengthening plate underneath that's just a muck trap in the wheel arch . All I could do was cut the old plate out and put another in . I bought a couple of these and welded it on underneath . Then I chopped out the wheel arch. I should probably mention as this point that I am not a welder .....I work for an electronic company and I've never really done any big body work welding jobs on any of my cars before.I did the floor pans on the ghia but that's hidden away .........there's no where to hide with this one . You can see another hole in the side closing plate in that pic ....I'll come back to that . I mentioned earlier that my bus is a cross over year, that means the wheel arch is one year only . It has an early step with a late arch flare. The correct arches are over £400 each ! the late ones are about 250 I think . My cab step is good so I decided to get a late arch and make it fit my step . Turned out ok I think. This is what I did to merge the late arch into my early step Bit of choppy choppy zap zap ...... Here a shot of my seam weld : Not too bad for me .....it ground down nicely with no holes so jobs a good'un.

Look forward to this unfolding, welding looks great to my untrained eye! Love a bay, I have a '71 early bay so may be a little biased. Great so far, thanks for sharing.

Love Choppy-choppy-zap-zap!
Can't wait to see how you progress! I've found a few welding jobs on my Cortez that I wasn't aware of until we stripped the inside! Gotta get practicing!
Looking forward to the updates!

Then I had a look at the sill closing panel . There was a previous repair ( Natch) which had gone through . I cut it out to reveal (revile!) the horror: I glimpse into the abyss : It could have been a lot worse ...the sill is good , just has a load of curse word floating about in there . All I could do was clean as much out as I could squirt a load of rust converter in there and then a load of wax. I tidied up the hole and plated it again . No pics on my phone right now ( I get one and stick it in later) That was the front driver arch done . The passenger side I thought was good ..... I've been strapping the boy ( aged 3 to 4 ) in this seat for the last couple of years. The seatbelt bolt obviously just about fell off in my hand . Check out the old repair ! This is the strengthening plate from underneath Better than the driver side I guess.
