Just following up from "How many cars have you owned"....
I had 52. Not a massive amount but still a lot.
However, this made me think of a friend of us......
A friend of us, 66 years of age, has just bought his 3rd car and has bought his first car when he was 19. Uncle William bought in 1967 a brand new Ford Falcon XR. It was sold after his passing in 2005. It was his 2nd car he ever owned.
I get bored with a car after about 9 months on average.....How can people keep a car that long is beyond me. What have you heard or seen?
Back to you....

I'm into either the 30s or 40s. Main reason for that is: -Some cars have dissapointed me that I bought despite the hype around them ; Triumph Dolly Sprint (I bought 1 and drove a couple) and a BMW E36 323i Manual Coupe. -Some cars really tested my patience, due to them being either expensive in areas to maintain, or more than I thought -Above is mainly the 'grass is always greener' syndrome -I always like trying a car out and there are many cars I like out there. That of course never helps. I'm surprised the Mondeo has 'stayed' ; I suspect it's down to its rarity, which ironically will help with the emissions zones soon in places, and the fact that was cheap for what it offered, in addition to it being a known car. At 20k a year for my mileage, anything I buy will be trashed in its value via a mileage perspective or require more maintenance. This is partly why some cars were moved on, and even the Mondeo is testing me at times (bushes for example on any old car) The M3 is the surprise too. I've had that for almost 4 years and have put on 20k onto it. I never thought I'd have a good car to replace the 205 GTi for thrills and offer a little more but it seems I have. But it's a car that has the right blend of most things for me. That leaves the Merc. That car was more of an itch I wanted to scratch and it turned up at the right time. That suffers with some of the above issues, but it's got to have been one of the best retros I've ever bought. It did live up to what it is in most respects, and opened my eyes in others. Do I now regret selling a few cars? Not really anymore. Some I wonder if they could have stayed but I'd have lost on what I own now ; I'm getting old. Notable ones are : -Escort RS Turbo S1 : An achievable 'boyhood dream' car. Sad I know! The burble and the look did it for me. But I hated having a car where I had to be careful where it was parked ; you have to love tea-leaves -Porsche 944 Turbo; I regretted selling this for a long time! It was as quick as the M3 but it was a wild child ; The M3's chassis is a nice improvement over the twitchy 944, which can give you a false sense of illusion. -Mercedes S124 E320 : A lovely car with decent miles. But I was sorting out niggling issues, and 20k a year would have taken away any value; my Mondeo is used at times a little like a company car, with expenses admittedly partiall covering that. Yes, it shouldn't be about value, but as a non-homeowner and a potential one, I'd be stupid and lying if I said it didn't matter. Naturally, I always want to own something else .

How tidy was Uncle William's Falcon after all those years/miles? A low mileage minter or hard used daily and looking its age?
|
|
|
|
|

|
From memory the Falcon was presentable for it's miles and use. It was used daily for trips to the shops and grand kids. Church on Sunday. I presume that Uncle was still working when he bought it.

Managed the grand total of 6 cars since getting my first one in the early 90's
Mk3 Escort van - didn't last long, rather rusty.
Manta 1.8 hatch - put a 400 kit on it, kept for quite a while, took off the road to fit Rover V8 never made it back on.
Manta GTE coupe - still got this one over 20 years later.....
Mk2 Fiesta XR2 - bought while GTE was off the road having welding done. Eventually rusted away.
Mk3 Fiesta XR2i - replaced mk2, written off in minor traffic shunt so sold it.
Nissan 200SX S14a - decided to get something decent about 15 years ago, still got it.

I posted in the other thread, but sort of in line with this...
Longest I’ve owned a car (Mazda Bongo) was 9 years, owned a van (the unlucky T5) for 6 years.
Longest I owned a motorbike (GS550) was 21 years, followed by 13 years (R1100S) but bikes are bit easier to find space for

I'm really not very good at selling cars, I tend to keep them so long that I grow attached to them. Other than the four I have now, I've also had three that I sold and one that I wrote off. ETA - oh, and one that I bought, got an MOT on, then sold. I intended to start using it, but couldn't sell my then-daily, which I still have.

I'd say mine is pretty low for a "car" guy, it's only the dailies I've bought due to long commutes that bring it up a bit high really.
1) 1957 vespa 125 > 1997 - 2001 (4 years) 2) 1977 triumph dolomite 1500HL > 1998 - 2000 (2 years) 3) 1999 smart&pulse city coupe > 2000 - 2003 (3 years) 4) 2003 smart roadster > 2003 - 2009 (5.5 years) 5) 2005 nissan cube > 2009 - 2011 (2.5 years) 6) 2003 nissan cube > 2011 - 2015 (4 years) 7) 2003 daihatsu cuore > 2012 - 2013 IIRC (1 year) 8) 2005 nissan elgrand rider > 2015 - 2018 (2.75 years) 9) 1985 honda acty > 2016 - date (3.75 years so far) 10) 2004 suzuki alto > 2017 - 2018 IIRC (1 year) 11) 2018 suzuki ignis > 2018 - date (1 year so far)

I tend to keep cars for a very long time: 1) land rover 88" bought in 1990, which I still own. 2) renault 5 parisiene; bought in 96 for a crate of beer from a fellow student to get to a work experience for 6 months when the engine in my landy died. It survived the 6 months, then weighed in for scrap. 3) fiat 127, bought for the annual student unions track day in zandvoort. the connecting rod came out in heat 3, then scrapped. 4) Peugeot 305 diesel estate. Bought on arrival in the uk in 98. very good car 5) Peugeot 405 turbo diesel estate. very good car, one of the best 6) Peugeot 406 HDI estate. very good car 7) Peugeot 206 HDI diesel. Bought in 2008 when the fuel prices hit £1. Not a good car unfortunately. 8) VW Polo Bluemotion. Bought in 2012 at an VW lease Auction. Still my daily driver and probably the best I have owned. 9) Mahindra jeep; current project.
9 cars in 29 years. With cars, I believe in knowing what You have got, rather then the grass is greener.

Like Fresh and Minty as a "car guy" I've only owned a few
Alfa 33 Peugeot 309 MK3 Golf 72 Bay Window Camper Smart Forfour Datsun Sunny Subaru Impreza Wagon Volvo C30 Porsche 996
So 9 in total. I still own the last four.
A more interesting stat is how many I've sold... Which is zero. Scrapped one, traded one in and the others I gave away.

Not too many. I tend to get the car I want and stick with it for a few years, so... UK - Mini 850 Volvo 145 (free) Sunbeam Alpine Series V Triumph 2000 Estate Land Rover S2A Subaru GL Estate Subaru Legacy 2.0L Estate Range Rover P38 4.0L (ex GMP) Land Rover 90 Subaru Legacy Estate 2.5L In my defense, I worked in the motor trade for a while and got to drive a shed load of cars. Just never owned them! Kuala Lumpur - Volvo 245 Isuzu D-Max 3.0L Manila - 1995 Range Rover 4.6L HSE Covers ages 17 to 63. I'm ignoring the 4 cars Madam has had since we moved here!

My brother started driving in 1995, and since then he's had 6 cars. He sold one, but he still owns the other 5, none of which are on the road, and all but one have been off the road for over a decade!

No, the heroic bit is how he's managed to store them in everyone else's garages, sheds, and lock ups so that he doesn't even need to pay for storage!

A friend in the Imp Club has recently celebrated 50 years ownership of his Imp. It's pretty much a daily driver too!
