I need some valve shims for my engine, they are 8mm valves, Kl racing state "We have now manufactured these 7.97mm because the valves are usually 7.95mm" but they don't do ones thick enough for what i want.
I think i need 6mm deep ones, and then grind them back a little. is there an engine over here that has something simular? From sweden i cant see any online, but the postage is like £25 just for these anyway
thanks

A long shot. Pop into your local motor bike repair shop and see if they can match what you require. I say that as I had a result doing just that some years back. And the icing on the cake, the shop could tell what other bikes & cars used the same shim which was very handy as the main stealer wanted mega bucks.

There are fiat shims in 33mm diameter. I bought them from aecar.co.uk.

Sorry, I think I misunderstood what part you're referring to.

So if not referring to the 33mm diameter valve adjustment shims that sit in the top of the follower bucket to adjust the valve clearances what are you referring to?

right i see, my first post does seem a little confusing ! ive got solid lifters, and i was after the shims for ontop of the valve, the valve stem is 8mm seems the only way to make sure this head is right is to take it to paul exon

Shims normally sit in a carrier on top of the valve - between the valve stem and the cam lobe/rocker/lever. If you’ve got solid followers I’m expecting this carrier to be part of the valve spring retainer, so non-standard but I guess are not from this engine originally. The shims will rarely be the same diameter as the valve stem but are normally in the 15-30mm range based on ones I’ve seen?

OK - looks like you either buy a full kit off IPD or measure what you’ve got, figure out what sizes you need and buy the individual shims from Volvo?

Just more confusion - If you have shims then the lifters are solid.
Now sounds like you have non stock bucket followers that use lash caps - If that is so then search for 8mm lash caps as extensively used on VW's etc.
If your are out of spec on the stock shim thicknesses then its likely that you either have a reground cam with a much reduced base circle or the valves may be sitting too high in the head - Tall shims are not common as they create issues and they are not advised it is better to drop the valves into the head or get valves with the correct stem length.

yes its an aftermarket solid lifter with lash cap. i thought lash cap was a swedish wording!
so here is an example of the sizes i need, i only found out today. the head has 4mm caps in it now, and the gap to the cam is around 0.070" [that is seventy thou] and i need to take off 0.014" for the tappet gap. So i think that is about 5.5mm cap.
they do these for vw this thick?

oh sorry also, no its a cam from a blank, they reduce the base circle so you can get more overall lift on the lobe. this has 12.9mm on this cam and 300 duration.
i think a standard cam can only goto 12mm or so.
i had a look before for vw lash caps and cant see any thick enough

so the head has 4mm shim in it now, the gap is 70 thou on one of the valves, so;
4mm+ 1.8mm[70 thou]= 5.8mm then - 0.35mm is 5.45
is that right?

I stand to be corrected, but as far as I can remember 4,20mm was the largest, standard Vw shim you could get
