I mean if you like the racing, but don't like the whole Revivalness of the Revival... maybe go to the Classic at Spa, or Le Mans Classic, or Donnington Historic, or the Silverstone equivalent? Going to the Revival and complaining about the fancy dress, the fakery, the set dressing and the crowds is like going to the super market and complaining it is full of food, when you really just wanted to buy some batteries. <snip> If I want to watch racing I'd go to the above mentioned events instead to be honest. 2020 Le Mans Classic is back and I'd argue that is all round a better event for car stuff. I've never been to the revival so I can't comment on what I think about it but it is on my bucket list - it probably is an experience first time round Having done the Le Mans Classic eight times and this year the Silverstone classic for the first time they both represent great value classic racing

I'd "like" that. I thumbnail the absolute fritters off something like that. I'd be high fiving my nine year daughter and yelling "WOOO! YOU THE DAWG NOW, BSTARDCHILD!" because... do you just buy the ticket, and then drive there? or is there like a ferry or something? and camping stuff? and do you have to pretend you speak effluent french? I'd love to know what the best way to do it is and how much it costs, and what to expect, and any tips for having the best experience, and all that jazz.

Yeah I can do that (not in this thread however) - but it's one persons perspective remember It would probably go well as an intro into the "Retro-Rides Club" does "2020 Le Mans Classic"

Lovely. OK, I think we're done here. Sheesh, precious much? It's a question of politeness, really. Also, I'd like to address this: I believe that entrance to such an event with the access-all-area PRESS pass tied around your arm might give one a slightly different experience and rather more positive perspective to someone who's paid a considerable amount of their own money to be there... in the places that they're allowed to be, that is I've paid something in the order of four hundred pounds to be there when you take our GRRC Membership into account, but someone who's presumably got in for free gets better access than me. It's work. It's not a jolly, I'm there to work, it's my job. I work damn hard at what I do, and even though I write for quite a few magazines now I'm still not in a position where anyone really knows who I am, so I'm incredibly grateful when any event gives me press access. And as for 'getting in free' - Goodwood accreditation is never guaranteed for someone like me and it gets approved pretty late in the year when the tickets are starting to sell out; for that reason, I always buy my own tickets for the Revival (and the Festival of Speed, and the Members Meeting) with my own hard-earned, just to ensure I get to attend even if I don't get accredited. And I also pay the huge annual sums for GRRC membership, which I was on the waiting list for for seven years. In reality, the Revival press pass gets me access to the pitlane roof and the assembly area - both excellent places to take photos and talk to drivers, but not having these two areas to visit doesn't exactly leave the average punter hard done by. Anyway, whatevs. Some Sunday pics: DSC_3823 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3745 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3868 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3985 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3793 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3655 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3671 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3705 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3687 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3725 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3766 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3777 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3791 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3807 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3827 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3815 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3856 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3873 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3879 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3878 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3905 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3940 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3949 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3962 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3974 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_3989 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_4000 by dbizzle_, on Flickr DSC_4005 by dbizzle_, on Flickr

Yup this is what I did with Members Meeting, got press accreditation after I'd purchased tickets. I actually got free tickets for Revival this year... well free in that I spend tens of thousands of pounds with Goodwood so asked if they could throw in a couple of tickets to Revival

We bought our tickets for the Revival two weeks beforehand. It said sold out on the website so we rang up and said "are there any tickets still available for the Saturday?" and the nice gentleman on the salesline said "yes, there are, please let me sell you some". This is not an isolated experience, either with the Revival or the Festival. I expect if there was no jeopardy of "selling fast, selling out!" people would all do the same and buy their tickets a couple of days before the event when the weather forecast's likely to be accurate. To avoid this and having their switchboard jam and their website crash, Goodwood actively provoke people into buying as early as possible. Anyway, this is starting to sound like an argument and I make it a policy to not argue with indignant people because it always ends badly. Thanks for posting the photographs, they're a great credit to your art. free in that I spend tens of thousands of pounds with Goodwood so asked if they could throw in a couple of tickets to Revival Sounds like a bargain put into that context

Great pictures, as always, D to the Biz For me, the Revival is a bunco booth of lies and tricks. It looks gorgeous... sights and sounds and smells... and it entices you in with the promise of wonders undreamt-of and exotic prizes. Yet you know under the gold leaf and garish colours, behind the wurlitzer, whirlwind sound and vision, it's just sawdust and gesso and illusion. Every year I have an @spookytim2 "never again" moment and every year I go again and wallow in being lied to, revel in the thin veneer that the world is a beautiful place, immerse myself in the glorious lie If ever a picture summed up the Revival, for me it's this one Karussel by Nick Liassides, on Flickr Beautiful ladies in wonderful old garb riding a genuinely antique fairground ride and smiling in the guttering gold of a late autumn sun for the sheer joie de vivre of it. But they're actors, paid by The Duke of Richmond and Gordon's theatre sponsorship scheme to sit on the carousel, to make it seem glamorous, to entice in even the most flinty-hearted of nay-sayers. They're whirling in ever-decreasing circles, going nowhere. And if ever there was a metaphor for the whole sorry of it, there you go You see Nick - I think that you are completely wrong - because here is a real steam galloper at Revival, with real people having a real hell of a good time this year - having done many Revivals over the years - I must have witnessed over a couple of million people (that's real people and not just a bunch rounded up from whatever actors guild for a photo shoot) and every single one of those people had the Revival smile, all having the times of their lives - all heading off home at the end of the day with some very special memories of a unique event - the vast majority of those few million people will also go home to start knocking the days off the calendar to next years event when they will return for yet more smiles, great cars, fabulous racing, fantastic atmosphere and many more lasting memories Not too sure but I think you must be going to an entirely different Revival than one that I attend every year for the full 3 days

Lol, that's a very genteel correction Chris and most civil of you 😁
....although I don't believe I've at any time suggested that people don't enjoy the Revival? 🤔 . Unlikely as it may seem, I enjoy the Revival too but because I'm cursed with an enquiring mind, it also annoys me in certain ways. Which is pretty much all I've said throughout and been challenged for what seems like every word
I don't really understand why simply voicing a different opinion to the masses is so guaranteed to get you vilified here but I'm not trying to suggest anyone needs to agree with me either. What about just allowing others to hold a differing viewpoint?
Who was it that said "if you were blindly happy every day of your life, you wouldn't be human, you'd be a gameshow host"?

What about just allowing others to hold a differing viewpoint? You didn't get vilified, someone else disagreed with you. Life sucks, get a helmet. In other news this discussion about other events has made me wonder why Donnington and Silverstone can get a world class Classic festival together, but Brands Hatch (arguably a better circuit than Donnington, Silverstone and Goodwood combined) can't seem to get one sorted. A subject for another thread I suspect.

Nick - Yep with you on that and if we were all the same life would be very boring - Revival also frustrates me in a few ways - has someone that is involved with the event (in a smallish way) they request my feedback every year - do they ever read it - possibly - do they ever act upon it - never - but hey I'm having such a good time I forget about the frustrating & annoying things in an instant

Cool! I really should go to the Kennels more, I think I’ve only been in there twice... You really should, lovely place to sit and just chill, for us it was the perfect spot to grab a quick cuppa and wind down* a little before the long drive home... *I say wind down, it was temporarily disturbed by Eubank Jnr having a photoshoot with his candy red McLaren and rev'ing the nuts off it while trying to manoeuvre it into position without hitting various Ferrari's and Astons. Was mildly amusing to watch however.

We used the Kennels forecourt for a Modern Classics mag photoshoot a couple of years ago - the staff were really lovely, they kept bringing us bacon sandwiches and coffees!
