For sale is my Wartburg 1.3 Tourist. It is a LHD 4 spd manual with Mot until the end of Feb 2020 so you can Jump in it and drive it away. I can also drive it to the gathering for folks who don't like venturing north on a roadtrip. Anyway more about the car.
I bought it in February with a couple of days mot left from the original owner who imported it when it was new. Sadly he was ill and could no longer drive the car but wanted it to live on. The idea was to drive it to Berlin for the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. When my friends coming on the trip saw it they declared great opposition to travelling in it.
Firstly, it has been brush painted bright yellow by the previous owner, We are not talking a good job here either. I quite like it as its part of the cars history but lets not be fooled that it is anything other than curse word. Secondly, it is quite rusty in places, there are areas where tape has covered sharp edges etc. The good news is the chassis, engine and suspension are seperate to the body. The chassis is in good condition so it passed the mot no problem. I also know where to get panels to repair these areas. To live a long life it really needs new panels.
The engine is a vw licenced 1.3, the same one found in polos and golfs of the era. It has had a new timing belt, water pump and head gasket. It is quite noisy but never let me down. It has done around 160000km. The main concern with the engine is the oil light will come on after a long motorway blast. I know of at least 2 other wartburg 1.3s that do this so it could be something unique to the excellent East German build quality or it could be a blocked breather that was quite a common issue on the vw's of the time. That said, it doesn't use or burn oil and I am quite prepared to drive it several hundred miles to the gathering with no worry. It cruises nicely at 60, the gearbox is good and there are no horrible noises from the suspension etc. I fitted 4 new tyres and a balljoint at the same time as the waterpump and timing belt and it has a stainless exhaust so there is no immediate expense on those fronts. The interior is in good condition with no rips or tears in the seats.
I would like this car to go to someone who will love it and save it as it is a really rare and quirky car. I fully intended to do this but realistically I have several cars in front of it in the queque and since it is now not going on the roadtrip I can't see me using it. So rather than have it decay outside, it should be used and enjoyed. Oh yes, that reminds me, if left standing in downpours, it will leak, handily there is a little tray built in that catches the water. My other East German cars also leak, so consider this a feature.
The price of the car is £750, this is not a bargain for a good car. It is my price based on it being a rare car that I would like saved and not just bought on a whim and then it dies. I have quite a few spare mechanical parts that I can sell seperately if you wish. PM me any questions or if you would like my number. I will add pics when I figure out how to on my phone.
