We took a trade-in of a '17 Dacia Duster commercial last week, 1.5 diesel... And I have to say, despite my own snobbish tendencies towards German cars.. It's not half bad! I did about 300 miles in it over the weekend, everything from up the motorway to a funeral, to sightseeing on the lake, and it was just a grand little thing to cruise around in.
I can see why there's blooming thousands of them being sold, especially to people wanting something cheap, new, and with a good warranty.
Yeah sure it feels a bit "5 years old design" , and while it does nothing brilliantly, it does everything adequately. I didn't feel like ragging it either! Which in this day and age of not being a curse word, Gatso vans, crowded roads, and so on, isn't a bad thing.
Bluetooth, check Cruise control, check Steering wheel radio controls, check Air con, check. Easy drive, check Rear parking sensors, check Good mpg, check. (48.7 mpg after the weekend)
What's not to like?
It got me thinking... The world needs cars like these. If the majority drive cheap, economical, affordable, and environmentally friendly cars like that, it will make it easier for the minority, ie, us, the retro car loving world stay driving and tinkering with our beloved "classics"
Thoughts?

I like the dacia duster - nice and simple no thrills - It reminds me of a modern Lada 4x4 model name of which escapes me even though i saw one yesterday.
It's a renault captur / nissan juke under the skin so can't go that far wrong I'd guess.
What did suprise me from your thread was the word "commercial" - i googled and was amazed to find it's a van in disguise! It doesn't even have panelled up windows!

Yup, seats whipped out, a very nice moulded plastic liner that you could use as a paddling pool, rear windows vinyled over and not opening. Not sure if they're available everywhere, we have a history of commercialised cars here in Ireland. There were thousands of Vw Golf vans sold here since the mk1, up to mk7, all changed from cars to vans by the importer.

The Dacia is not sold here. A shame I think as I don't mind them.

A '66 reg Dacia Duster is my only gesture towards 'modern' motors. A 1'6 petrol 4x4 (Nissan 1.6 engine) it's the only car I've ever bought brand new. Absolutely spot on especially for the money. Tows my racing SIMCA and collects 'projects' all over the place and has enough for me anyway in comfort and gadgetry while being done in practical materials to take the abuse that my previous Espace (a proper one, Mk2 MATRA built) endured for 18 years.

I must admit that I like the duster myself, although I've never driven one. But I do also wish that there were new budget cars that were cheap as chips, and had nothing in the way of luxuries. Just as basic as a car can be.

Knowledge is to know a Tomato is a 'fruit' - Wisdom, on the other hand, is knowing not to put it in a 'fruit salad'!

I got the wife a 14 plate Sandero Stepway in January. It’s a great no frills car as we aren’t into gadgets etc We’ve done 5000 miles on it so far with very very few faults

Just as basic as a car can be. I wonder how basic a car can be today. Of course there will be loads of gumpf for emissions and safety and all that sort of stuff, but how much can we get rid of that we don't need? lazyness, convenience, comfort, there must be loads of stuff that could be got rid of. My Uncle is currently looking for a new car, all he wants is something basic to get him about, a dacia is top of his list at the moment, but even then theres stuff on the one he looked at that he doesnt want!
