I have "big block" 4k in my ke20 Corolla and have had problems with oil pan seal. The car is only for summer use. Every winter I have to lift engine out and replace that oil pan seal. This summer the seal last about 1000km and it´s leaking oil again. These problems made me thinking to do engine swap. I would like to have some extra ponies too, nothing crazy though (explained below). Obviously the easiest and maybe the most common swap is 4AGE with suitable bellhousing to fit T50 gearbox and maybe some AE86 rear axle. BUT then comes the price. 4AGEs and AE86 drivelines are widely used in rallying here in Finland so prices are up in the skies... And "everybody" has 4AGE, boring Other problems are finnish MOT restrictions. You can´t have more than +20% power and +20% displacement without expensive permit. I know that the TE27 is used as comparison model in this case (most powerful model in same series) so 115ps x 1.2 = 138ps and 1588cc x 1.2 = 1905.6cc. Must check if TE27 is still comparison model before I make any big decisions.. Has anybody done or know anything about making 3ZZ-FE engine rwd conversion? This engine is used in e120 Corolla and has 110ps. They are quite cheap and have had e120 wagon with that engine.. Cons are at least: have to make bellhousing to fit gearbox, water outlets and intake are facing to fire wall when used in rwd position.. Any other cheap 1.6/1.8 engine suggestions? Of course I don't have as good range of options here as you have in UK..

Is it a cork gasket?

No, it is "rubber" gasket. And by "rubber" I mean that it should be made of rubber but it seems to harden quite fast.
Oil pan is made of sheet metal so it is not as sturdy as cast one..

I ran a 5k with a spurious sump gasket and never had any issues with leaks. Had 2 4ks also with original gaskets and no issues, seems strange you're having so much trouble? 5k or 7k is a nice upgrade if you can locate one, great torque increase. Hi lift cam, headwork, solid lifters, lightened flywheel and a set of bike carbs and you'd have a great engine. What price does a 4age 16v make over there?

Thanks for all comments! 5K engines are too used in rallying here.... So all Lite-aces are missing engine already Have seen one 7K engine on sale here. Don't remember price though.. I think the main problem is that the seals have not been originals. Maybe the easiest and cheapest way is to try and find original seal. I like the 4K and it suits for the car.. There is already hi lift cam, lightened flywheel and better carb so it might be the best way to keep going that road. I have bike carbs too waiting but that oil leak issue is getting me frustrated.. I saw 4 AGE for sale now, it was 650€. But it might need rebuild. Then I must buy T40/T50 gearbox which are suprisingly used in rallying, so those are at least 400€. Then I need bell housing A to T gearbox, it's about 300€. Then some AE 86 parts in rear, about 350€.... For some people those prices might be affordable but not for me. Those Nissan engines were interesting. Next question is where can I find one EDIT 1: Saw 4 AGE and T50 gear box for sale. Both were ready to go and engine had wiring loom.. 1000€ engine + 500€ gearbox... EDIT 2: Remembered that those CA engines were used in Bluebirds and Sunnys, those we have here.. Don't know how fwd engine converts to rwd use. Also it needs maybe 200sx parts like gearbox and rear axle. Those I could find..

How about using some silicone sealant along with the gasket? Make sure it's not the crank seals that are leaking also

I have used silicone sealant with the gasket. Next time must choose different brand if that helps.. At least front crank seal is also leaking but not so bad.

What about a 7AFE and retrofitted with a 4AGE head, gives you a 1800 4AGE

Atmo V8 Power . No slicks , No gas + No bits missing . Doing it in style. Austin A35van, very different------- but still doing it in style, going to be a funmoble

What an interesting idea! Have seen one 2 AGE here in Starlet, don't know how much it made power. My building pace would be so slow that must solve 4Ks oil leak so can keep it drivable meanwhile I build the engine.. But definitely I like the mad idea! I would like to have ke20 Toyota powered in the future too.

Are you using a torque wrench for the bolts? With rubber gaskets I usually make sure everything is spotlessly clean, then put some Victor Reinz sealer on my fingers and rub the entire gasket with it in a thin layer. I then put a small bead of the same sealer anywhere there is a direction change on the gasket, then fit the sump and torque to 8nm if M6 bolts. Never had one leak after.

I know that those nuts can be tightened really easy too tight. I have workshop manual for the engine, need to check right Nm from there. Also must be more careful with cleaning and need to have silicone sealant from different brand next time. I have now used red one from Plastic padding (swedish at least the brand)
I'll call for Toyota service if there is still oem seals available. I doubt that but I'll try..

Are you sure the sump's not distorted? It only needs to be 1mm out of true to give you a leak, also try some spring washers under the sump bolts to stop them working loose.

That might be problem too. Need to check that better next time. I have tried to find as good oil pan as I can.
I have got good little tips here! In couple of weeks I might take Corolla off the road and start taking the engine out again..
Called to Toyota service and it's possible to buy oem seal for 55€. First I must sort out if I have older or later model of K engine. The bolt pattern is different between those two..
