Not exactly retro (?) but I was thinking of buying either A ZR160 VVC or a ZS180 V6.
Is there anything not available service/replacement-wise?
Looking at a sort of resto-mod rather than a Barry'd up body kit, maybe just slightly lower (especially the ZS) and get my stereo in.

I'd guess plenty of parts still out there, places like rimmer bros etc?

My mate has just sold a Cooper S and got a ZR160. Cheaper to run, cheaper to buy and has more doors 😆 . They don’t feel like they were both made in the same year though! I considered getting one when I was building a track car, but a clio came along cheap.

Saw a V6 a couple of weeks ago - looed and sounded gorgeous.
Had a ZR as a hire car for a few days back in the day. I'm over 6ft and found the driving position a bit cramped due to the limited adjustability of seat & wheel but it was an absolute hoot to thrash drive sensibly down the Lincolnshire lanes.
Rover did make some nice cars back then - borrowed a mates 620Ti for a week a couple of times - would take 4 adults very comfortably to Belgium very quickly and for a big car that was pretty good down the lanes too.
Tough choice.

Good drivers seats can be hard to find, the VVC is a fun car to drive. Check the road tax on a ZS180 before buying one

When I worked at a Rover/MG garage I was fortunate to be able to drive quite afew of these. I found the ZR was a hoot to drive but I could never get on with the driving position, it was afew years ago but from what i can remember it was as if the seat was too high or the steering wheel too low. If I was looking at one of these id be more tempted by a Rover 200 BRM, only because the interior is awesome, and its a BRM. I love the ZS V6 and would have one in a heartbeat if I could afford to run it. Bearing in mind these cars are both based on the Rover 200 and 400 which were a fair few years older they will feel a little more aged than other cars of the same age, but I wouldnt let that put me off. Goodness

I have a zs 180, it's not currently on the road but I love it. They are very cheap to buy at the moment and have been for a while but I guess the prices will start increasing as more get scrapped or broken for parts. There's a few problems they can have, mainly the vis motors and clutch cylinder bracket and plastic clutch cylinders breaking. These can be changed though to the metal honda civic cylinders and a thicker metal bracket and uprated Vis motors are also available. The cambelts also put people off as there are 3 and can cost a lot to change if a garage does it. But if you buy the locking tools then it's not difficult to do yourself. When mine was on the road I joined the mg car club for about £40 and then was able to insure it with Peter best for £120, this was limited to 5000 miles though but still it was my only car and I have zero no claims bonus.

Thank you. I'm fairly sure after the MR2 everything is going to feel high up. I knew about the tax, a friend has a SportKa that costs about a million quid a year to tax!
