This should be of interest to restomodders, hot rodders and kit car makers. The text below is the same as on eBay and this link sends you to the ad with pictures (to save clogging up the RR server) - www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333183905053 . I've started the bidding there at £1250 but I'd be looking for around £1750-£2000 at auction end. Clearly there is some latitude on price here as I wouldn't be subject to eBay listing fees...
Up for sale is a really unique opportunity for someone who wants to make use of the legendary AJ16 Supercharged straight six engine either in a restored Jaguar, a track car, a hot rod or a kit car. Up for sale is all that is needed to fit and run an unlocked Jaguar XJR6 engine with the added benefit of flappy paddles and a configurable TCU.
I had intended to fit this package to my 1966 E-Type a la Beecham but the engine and the gearbox are just that little bit too large to squeeze in without chopping the body or the engine frame, both of which would result in the car being designated radically altered and subject to a Q plate.
I therefore need to revert to plan B for my engine and transmission. My problem becomes someone else's opportunity. Because I wanted it in my restoration, I had spent a great deal of time sourcing the best XJR I could find as a donor and, at 72,000 miles, the one I found was barely run in! The engine and gearbox were professionally removed from the donor car and prepared for storage. The engine had also had a Terraclean before removal.
I am therefore selling what amounts to a complete conversion kit of engine, an uprated S/C pulley, auto gearbox, unlocked ECU, an aftermarket TCU and associated flappy paddle kit, along with the engine loom (cleaned and dressed by me to save someone a filthy job) and several other items (spare ECUs, gearbox strengthening kit etc) to help the new owner along the way.
This lot owes me several thousand pounds and I do not expect to recover it all but every little helps towards the cost of another engine and gearbox.
First, the engine and gearbox came from a 1995 car with an excellent service history. I drove the car for several months and it worked very well indeed and I was sorry to have to hand it over but it was destined to be a donor. The shell has moved on to pastures new as it was used to rehouse the internals of an XJR6 with very poor bodywork. I have retained the full service history which comes with the engine and gearbox.
The engine ECU has been to the XJR expert Andy Stodart and has been "breathed" on by him. Although cheaper than getting an aftermarket ECU, his services do not come cheap. The engine immobiliser function has been permanently disabled which will allow the engine to keep working without the rest of the XJR's electronics.. The ECU is configured for automatic transmission. He has also provided one of his revised crank sensor mounting brackets (look up Andybrackets). This has the effect of advancing the ignition timing by 5 degrees everywhere. This comes with attached fitting instructions for the bracket, for whoever buys this kit. If you are unfamiliar with Andy's work, Google will point you to the many satisfied XJR owners who have used his services (I am not allowed to hyperlink by eBay).
I am also providing the necessary oxygen sensor bosses for the exhaust system as these are not standard. The Lucas Sagem engine management system uses NTK Titiania sensors which are smaller than most other sensors so need smaller bosses to match.
I will also provide a marked up version of the harness diagram to help work out which wires from the XJR harness need to be connected in order to let the engine run. I have cleaned, dressed and rebound the engine loom with Tesa 51026 and packed the electrical contacts with Dow Corning DC4.
There is also an oversized Powerhouse crank pulley and new belt (around £260 IIRC) which will provide the engine with about 10% more torque than standard and smaller increase in power.
Taking advantage of the GM 4L80-E gearbox, also included in the package is a TCI EZ-TCU Transmission Controller - over $650 imported from the USA before postage, duties and VAT.... The EZ-TCU™ is fully configured and ready to run right out of the box – no tuning necessary. But for those who demand customization, the unit is also optionally fully programmable based on load, speed and rpm. TCI® and FAST™ engineers took a page from the very successful FAST™ EZ-EFI® Self Tuning Fuel Injection System and designed the EZ-TCU™ programming interface to be completely intuitive. There is no real expertise needed if you want to custom program your calibration. The EZ-TCU™ is capable of real-time switchable calibrations, which allows for multiple setups. Run one calibration on the way to the track, and then with the push of a button, have a more aggressive setup ready for the race. The multiple shift modes include full manual mode for using bump or paddle shifters.
The other feature of this TCU is the ability to add on a unit which converts an electronic signal to a mechanical one, which would allow a builder wanting to use, say, old Smith's dials..
Also included is the TCI Paddle Shift module (another $640 before postage, duty and VAT). The TCI Paddle Shifter communicates to the EZ-TCU through a wireless CAN signal that cannot be affected by signal interference or disruption. The steering wheel mounted unit operates by slim, 1⁄2-inch thick paddle shifters which instantly instruct the transmission as to your gear of choice without hesitation or delay. This shifter fits all 5 & 6-bolt aftermarket steering wheels and ships complete with several spacers of varying width, allowing you to adjust the steering wheel location to your personal preference. Power for the shifter system comes from the horn button relay rather than from batteries which require replacement and can result in a low power signal.
With all this TCI kit, again Google is your friend. There are a lot of clips on YouTube of this stuff in action.
I am also including a $160 Transgo 4L80-E high performance transmission upgrade HD2 kit should the mood take the next owner to firm up an already fairly bullet proof gearbox.
There are also a couple of spare Jaguar ECUs and a stock TCU, as well as the diagnostic port and associated cabling.
The kit can be collected by arrangement from Steve Jones of this parish at Old Bones, Weyhill, near Andover. (He's doing my E-Type.) I would have to discuss with him whether he would be prepared to put the engine and gearbox and other kit on a pallet, so if that is your intention, please contact me before the auction end.
For those who only want parts of it, I am not intending to break the kit up until it has had a while on the market as I would really prefer to sell the kit as a whole and would like to see the implementation! I am not interested in swaps at the moment although, I wouldn't rule out a good XK6 4.2 fuel injected engine and ECU and auto gearbox or maybe an Alpina B3 3.3 drivetrain, possibly with car still attached, but I'm not looking to spend money at the moment:).
Prior inspection welcome. Please shoot me any questions and I'll do my best to reply promptly.
Cash on collection please.
