I've never seen or heard of this before. I'm assuming the width was taken out of the bumpers or something, and it wasn't actually a different body shell. Or was it? Anyone know?

A Mk3 Cortina is 1,702mm wide. For a car to be classified in the small car tax bracket in Japan the maximum width is 1,700mm. The Cortina was therefore 2mm too wide. Easy enough to lose 1mm off the extremities of the bumpers.
So, not 1/2" and certainly not crushing the whole car in a 'Giant Clamp'

Volvo did change the side strips on the Volvo 480 to get under 1695mm for selling in the JDM.

it does look different in the grainy pic, wipers and windscreen look narrower, roof has more of a bulge. You know what, it's just the sort of stupid thing they would do in the 70's
