OK so our 1976 heap of a Land Rover is exempt from the additional ULEZ charge in London as it has 'Historic' status. Name and post photo of your cool retro for doing the same. I'm going to kick off with the only cool car my dad ever had. James

History repeating itself. Mr Sinclair new what was coming he was too advanced for his own good Just to add, I live nowhere near the place, so it means very little to me atm. No doubt it will roll out to other cities, however.

What's lesser known is Sinclair dipped his toe in the electric bicycle market after, but I think the "failure" of the C5 probably put a damper on any interest in the idea. It's a shame as these would have made more sense, and he'd have gotten a big head start on the growing e-bike market, or maybe he'd have still been way ahead of his time. He kinda had the right idea though, most peoples journeys are short hop in urban areas and something between proper motorized vehicles and walking/cycling is a gap that needs filling, though it now seems to be by electric kick scooters.

The sad thing is, the C5 was designed to fit a requirements of a new law that was introduced. Hence it's styling and performance, they had plans and developments for a full range of cars. The build quality is actually very good, the plastics are all automotive grading, and it went huge testing and evaluation programs. The design and building actually set new standards across the range. No one in the world had moulded plastic that size at the time, and the Hoover C5 factory was excellent. Had we actually been forward thinking, and ignored the usual dross in the tabloids, we would of been world leaders in electric cars 30 to 40 years ago. Bought a scimitar with one eye on the ULEZ but was hoping to get a W123 estate or a Granada estate but they are getting out of reach for me for a decent one in budget

Sinclair C10 design 1984 vs Renault Twizy Sinclair C15 1984 vs some modern thing Great post, and arguably these light urban runarounds are way more relevant to real transport needs than YouTube drag race fodder like Teslas. I reckon it'd be way more efficient overall to have people tipping around in these things for suburban commutes with a hotrod in the garage for fun than it is to drive a two ton Tesla iPhone everywhere in terms of energy use, cost to benefit and road space. This push for long range EVs as total replacements for diesels is wrong headed I reckon. It encourages the same pattern of long distance commutes rather than rethinking everything about how we live. Unsurprisingly, very popular with San Francisco Cisco tech types. If ever there was an example of how NOT to develop a modern city for the good of all SF is it. Dublin where I live is eerily similar in some ways on a smaller scale. All is not lost for British EVs, I believe Westfield, better known for their kit cars, builds more autonomous vehicles than anyone else, including Google/uber.

its getting close but none of the "fleet" are currently tax exempt and not that i have any desire to EVER drive in London... but if i did it would be in this.... firstly because it would take up more than its fair share of the road but more importantly it would really pee off the guy that used to drive it. the p/muppet that now seems to think that London is his.. seperated at birth or what!!

Will the extension of this charge to North and South Circular in 2021 put an end to Ace Cafe meetings for classics or just be absorbed by Ace Cafe enthusiasts who want to attend this iconic venue or will it not affect the Ace Cafe ?

I have a 1967 Morris cooper which is exempt. Might have to make weekly trips up to tower bridge/billinsgate so I can claim back some of the massive fine I got given a few years back.

For me it would come down to a choice between the following. That is a thing of beauty. Long black lines from every traffic light, speed cameras flashing like crazy and sideways on every roundabout. My dream day!

If The Mayor of London had actually wanted to do something about the air quality in London he would not have caved into the cabbies and given them a 15 year exemption on their diesel cabs... Don't get me started on the electric ones that drive around on the petrol engine because the chargers are not high enough voltage or even enough of them.... We need clean air but I don't think the current thinking is either that joined up or going to make that much of a difference. Things like slowing down traffic and making them wait at traffic lights longer does not contribute to clean air... P.
