Hi guys,
I am sure similar questions have been asked a million times before but I cant find what i'm looking, my google foo has quit.
If I had a classic beetle, chopped the roof right off and welded the doors shut and body chopped it, obviously with no unsafe sharp edges etc. Temporary mud guards for MOT etc.
Essentially make it a bit like a buggy... what would the implications be legally? Or does it fall under the re-body category of car mods?

It's on a seperate chassis so you should be OK with body mods

Think its just a V5 change to convertible.

From memory, you don't 'need' mudguards fro the MOT, but they need to be in the vehicle and be able to be fitted in the case of rain or falling snow. Its a Plod matter, not an MOT matter.

Yeah, we MOTed the Fugitive without mudguards last year. It won’t fail an MOT, but it’s a construction and use thing so as said you could be stopped if it hasn’t got them The regulation is;
63 Wings
(2) Subject to paragraphs (3) and (5), every vehicle to which this regulation applies shall be equipped with wings or other similar fittings to catch, so far as practicable, mud or water thrown up by the rotation of its wheels or tracks.
So is fairly open to interpretation. But you could be stopped for it, and I believe people have been stopped from carrying on until rectified. But we drove around for a few months before fitting them and had no problems

And chopping the roof off and welding up the doors posses no issues, as V5 will be changed to convertible. Along with the body drop so it will be accessible without the doors. Similar to a buggy. Thanks all for the replies.

DVLA will want to see that the floorpan is not modified (i.e. it's not a swb buggy) so will ask for photos. Wait until they request them though, and only send the bare minimum they ask for.
How do I know? My wife bought a rotten 1970 Karmann Cabrio for me to take the cabriolet only parts off, and a 1968 Beetle to put them into. DVLA wouldn't accept the change from saloon to convertible on the logbook until they'd seen photos of the finished car! It's not finished so we've got no logbook yet...

curse word. Cause don't plan on making it a proper convertible... more chipping roof up and welding everything shut, like a metal buggy body made from a Beetle More something like this... or this

Chassis will remain stock! Yeah, that's what you've got to show DVLA. It's because you're changing the body style on the logbook. Build it, take photos, and then apply for the change. Don't confuse them with engine changes at the same time, going from blue saloon to red convertible is enough! Just make sure you don't modify the floorpan at all, including the pan halves. No flattening out the battery trays, dropping seat mounts or anything. (That's for after, nudge nudge, wink, wink). Build the strengtheners into the heater channels, not the floorpan. By the way, i like the black one above! There was a grey and white '64 at the shows in the mid 90s with a similar look that I really liked, reminds me of that!

That's fab to know. Won't be happening for a while and need to find a bug that I don't feel bad butchering. The info is definitely a big sway to doing it

Always fancied doing something similar myself along the lines of a Ford Pheaton style hot rod

Would it not be worth looking for one of those not so nice looking beetles that has already had a convertible conversion most of which don't look nice but as its been done a while you could send the dvla pictures of it before you start work or it might already have convertible on the v5, get the v5 in your name never mention it again.
