Any Capri Gauge Advice? Just bought a Ghia and the Temp & Fuel gauges don't do anything? I read this could be the voltage regulator? Only thing is the Oil pressure is at the bottom and battery gauge is like the picture below (fuel is stuck right at the top and the big dials work fine) my sources is this site but doesn't mention the oil/volt gauge: www.capriclub2000.co.uk/help-info/fix-fuel-and-temp-gauges/Any advice how to test these would be great

IIRC the oil gauge is actually oil fed isn't it? This is a long time ago (Dad has a 78 2.0 Ghia) but there is a voltage regulator bolted to the back of the dials isn't there as well?
The Ammeter is the most useless gauge ever, better off seeing if you can convert that to a voltmeter using the face.

Is it a voltmeter anyway? just thinking with the car being on an alternator , only experience of this is putting an ammerter in a Spitfire 1500 and it burnt out haha.
This is 79 2.0 Ghia. I'm guessing its oil fed and there is a voltage regulator on the back i hear. I'm thinking if they're all broke maybe the same thing has happened to them all? :s

Hi, It's very likely the fuel and temp gauges work through the voltage regulator. The Ammeter is probably supplied through a shunt, located elsewhere, because they don't want heavy battery cables onto the instrument cluster. The oil pressure gauge is probably ignition fed and earthed through a sender on the engine. None of them are going to be precision instruments.

More likely Ford used a mechanical gauge I’d say?

The oil pressure gauge is mechanical and the feed is piped straight from the engine where the oil pressure switch would usually be on the inlet side of the block located in between the engine mount and the dipstick tube, this is on my yb I'm building so on your capri the oil pressure switch and take off for the turbo oil feed won't be there the pipe should be straight into the block The gauge is fed by a black plastic pipe that runs through the bulkhead to the back of the clocks 99% of the time fuel and temp problems are caused by the voltage regulator, you can test if they are actually working by grounding the temp sender wire to the block to see if the gauge moves to the hot area don't do it for too long but it takes a little to move so no more than about 20 seconds will give you your answer, also do this with the fuel sender wire it should show full If your in stoke anytime soon I have a set of 4cylinder clocks you could try

Get a ohm test on the fuel sender, might not be your dash that is screwed. More likely the sender. Fuel sender details as much as anyone would ever need to know www.capripower.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/fuel-sender-fuel-gauge-operation.21658/But if the temp guage does nothing also its maybe the regulator. How to replace the voltage regulator, pretty simple. www.capripower.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/voltage-regulator-replacement-by-bristol-red.321/Oil is just an oil feed directly no electronics. Edit: Just a quick update as it popped into my head. Battery indicator is usually there in the middle as its an ammeter, will drop or rise by a couple mm. Usually during initial startup cranking until the alternator kicks in. With the temperature sender, my pinto used to have no thermostat in it. And i thought my guage was broken. Would never move. Until i fitted a thermostat and it actually started getting up to temp and warm. Even during summer and daily driving it in traffic, It never moved. Prob need a new sensor, but it tells me when its warm now. So I'm happy.

From what I remember regulator supplies 5 volt too both fuel and temp gauges.Cheating way to test gauges is just earth both gauge outputs and gauges she go to full for fuel and red for temp.

I second the above, test by short to earth. Make sure the tank and engine are both connected electrically to the chassis / battery using a resistance scale on a multimeter.

Cheers for the Advice all. Will have a look over the weekend. I cant imagine its much and hopefully a quick fix.
Thanks for the offer of trying the spare clocks FordPerv . It might be a while till i can get the Capri up to Stoke but will let you know if I'm still having trouble etc.
