In the next few months I will be looking for a modernish hatch. I need to get my mountain bike in the back to get to races (removing both wheels to di this is not a problem) and 4 seats at other times will be a benefit as my other cars are all 2 seaters.
There is a very good chance I will stick to what I know and like, some sort of MG Rover K series.
4 wheel drive could tempt me away though (I don't need 4x4, just like the idea of a really small one)
I've always liked the idea of a late 90's Daihatsu Sirion 4wd. If anyone has or did own one would love to hear more about them. Subaru Justy's seem to have all but disappeared. I know Suzuki recently did a 4wd Swift which I like, but its more money than I want to spend. Any others i should consider?

The Ssanngyong is a weird thing, I quite like it but it is a traditional 4x4 with a chassis. I would like something petrol and more car like.
The Honda above is pretty damn cool. I used to have a CRV and I liked that a lot. Maybe an HRV is worth looking at too.

I saw one of these the other day and thought it looked quite cool. Regarding Daihatsu, what's the parts situation like these days? They stopped selling in Europe in 2013, but as they're owned by Toyota, I presume parts "should" be get-able through their sources?

Suzuki ignis (not a particularly interesting car) but They made them in 4x4 Or a Freelander 4x4 and you get a K series engine Panda 4x4 (although I'd go for the 100hp instead) Suzuki jimny
Can't think of any other small 4 seater cars that may have 4wd

Subaru Justy's seem to have all but disappeared. I know Suzuki recently did a 4wd Swift which I like, but its more money than I want to spend. Any others i should consider? The post '96 Justy was a rebadged Swift 4wd no Subaru parts involved, unburstable mechanicals (the gearbox can take 400hp), but the usual Swift rust problems, (front floor and sills), so very unlikely to find a decent one. Also a really small load area for a bike, I used a bike rack on ours. Wonderful wee cars though, I have over 350K in them, terrifyingly capable on snow, run rings round 'proper' 4wd's. If I find a cheap 3door with a floor still in it I'll probably have another one. The Ignis 4wd doesn't have the stronger gearbox of the old cars. Lots scrapped for gearbox failures, usually the diff. One thing with Suzuki's, no-one changes the gearbox oil, cars where it has been changed generally don't have problems. No experience with the current gen Swift 4wd. Since it's a standard box with the same bolt on diff design as the Ignis, only available on the 1.2 and not the 1.5, you have to wonder if that fact means Suzuki don't have faith the box can take any more power in 4wd. Some very interesting suggestions above, thank you all for your input. Certainly have some more ideas and things to search on ebay.
I don't know why I had never thought of a Freelander before. Have had no end of green ovals before. I love the K series engine. I just did a bit of googling and you can buy some interesting bits for them 'off the shelf' which may be handy as my cars are sometimes called upon for marshalling/course cars and recce/service barge on rallies.

We had two Terios as office cars for a while, both the model pictured above and the previous much narrower model. I was impressed with how well they went on the gravel back roads. The older one especially looked like it would roll quite easily but I actually felt pretty safe thrashing it hard through the windy hills on the gravel. That older car is still local as one of the mechanics at the garage that does our servicing bought it for a good price when the lease ran out. Last I talked to him he was very pleased with it.

I did have a look at one of those Pinins but the GDI engine is not a goodun. Shame as the rest of the car is nice. My other half has a mk1 Outlander 2.4 Sport and that is a damn good car, great handling, awesome 4x4 system and a powerful engine, i've just not been able to find another as good or I would. They where always fairly rare. Funny thing is, the second generation where made heavier, slower and not as nice to drive and they sold 3 times as many.

Well all things considered. I reckon I will be looking around for a petrol Freelander. All parts are easily available from specialists and they are all cheap, even transfer boxes etc don't cost too much should the need arise.
A bonus to this is I can use it in more clubs trials for tyro events so my nephew can once again compete. (A majority of off road clubs are ALRC and so 'Land Rover only', so this vehicle could also be used in the nationals)
