Ok so this is an odd/great story & I thought you guys would be interested! I'm a VW guy and have been since I learned to drive & bought my first Polo - but my dad bought a brand new Austin Maestro VDP (A802KNB) when I was 5.... To say the R series engine with fuel issues, talking dash & plenty of rust repairs kind of stayed with me. On Facebook I saw a Montego 1.6 LX for sale for £500 & took a shine to it, but being close to Christmas I could afford it! A few weeks later the same car popped up as part of a Bonus Ball at £9 a ticket - so I thought sod it & bought a ticket - number 41! A couple of days later I get a message from the owner to tell me the car was mine. Relaying of the car by a few friends has been organised & the car is being shipped from Cambridge to Birmingham (done), then Birmingham to Crieff (arranged for 5th/6th Jan) Going to try and make it watertight first, then tend to the rust and replace a few parts. Upgrade the brakes, coilovers and MGF 15" wheels & generally enjoy it until the MOT is due in July. After that who knows!

Haynes Manual & Rove workshop manual both acquired. Hoping to sort out a few parts over Christmas for it and get started after the new year. Got a day booked off to get up to Narven to rummage over a couple of Montegos!

Project budget is £500... Not sure how long that will last as it needs a bit of work on the brakes. Then the rust (all cosmetic really - nothing needed done to the chassis)
Found some 16" MGF wheels locally, just refurbed with tyres & some 2nd hand Polo 6n coilovers to bash on it... And a Cherrybomb from my youth! 😀

Result for that money, should be similar suspension to the Maestro so the Polo coilovers are easy to fit.
I think I just had to grind a bit of material of the fronts and open a few of the holes out a bit.
Hope you like rust..

Still cool for £9. Montegos and maestros do drive well. Much better than the Fords of that generation.

Genuine Rover Workshop manual sourced for £5 off ebay. Also looking at part numbers etc i should be able to use some Mg ZR sunroof drainage pipes to stop the sunroof leaking (there aren't any on it at the moment!) So far my essential list runs to the following:- Boot carpet complete Drivers side 1/4 window (mines cracked & will probably fall apart when removed to fix the rust) Roof lining inc all trim clips, grab handles & interior lights. Passengers side front electric window unit (complete) Sunroof switch & surround. Its off to the bodyshop as soon as I get the brakes serviced! Windscreen & all 3 rear windows out. Repair and repaint the apertures. Cut the lower skin off both front door and replace / repaint. Refit windows. Hoping for not much more than £500. But I think its worth doing it right once, then enjoying it for a while!

So things are moving forwards.. I took a trip up to Knaven near Peterhead to have a scavenge of another white LX Montego. I managed to get a rooflining biscuit (just needs recovered in new material & fitted), a sunroof drain pipe, a sunroof switch unit & a drivers side rear 1/4 window... All for £30! On my first drive i had a stone flick up and crack my screen too! Which sucks, but I have windscreen cover on the insurance, so they are going to take care of that! New water pipe to fit tomorrow - its damaged and leaks once its warm. And a Brand new SU carb to put on it (still in the original box!) - which should stop any fuel leaks!

I was an Austin Rover mechanic when these were new. The Turbo model is PROPER fast but I love the fact you are saving this LX model. IIRC, I was forever changing the rubber cam cover seals!

Exterior will be as it left the factory. But under the bonnet maybe not so much!

Good on you for saving it - and the Bonus Ball bit had me laughing - a car for £9! I've a soft spot for these too; my dad had a B reg 1.6L in Gold, then replaced that with an E reg 2.0Si. The Si eventually got relegated to trailer hauling duties before coming to me as my then daily - I swear it got faster as it got older (probably as the rusting bits falling off made it lighter!). Terminal rust killed it in the end, well, that and spitting all it's oil out due to a blocked breather. Friend of mine used to work at Austin as an R&D engineer - they had great fun when developing the Montego Turbo as they stuck all the running gear in a beige shell badged as a 1.3L!

Well i was reading that the factory used the Montego as the test mule for the K series engine. So I know it fits.... I'll be getting at the parts together once the car is rebuilt (probably buy a full MG ZR & transfer most of the running gear over in to the montego shell) - should be able to get a full running scrapper for about £200-£300. A VVC 160/180 would be ideal!

Montego V6 would be cool though.

It was just on the Facebook owners club page that it popped up. Norm75 - yes but the K-series has also been fettled by Lotus & By Caterham to produce 180/190 & 250bhp in various states of tune! 5x 15" Maestro MG Turbo Wheels sourced! Sticking to Full LX interior & spec as far as I can - with the addition of some driving lights & Possibly a roof rack & Box paainted the same colour as the car (white on top & grey on the bottom). Wheels are getting refurbed in the same Grey as used on the lower section of the car too.... New fuel pump arrived along with various service parts from Rimmer Bros. Still need to get plugs, leads, oil filter, air filter, timing belt / water pump. Then onto the brakes! MGF 280mm conversion on the front with new rear drum & shoes. The Polo 6n coilovers (probably AP for a bit better comfort) & then finally a nice custom stainless exhaust.... I have the plan to get this thing all sorted for my 40th Birthday on the 10th of April....
