Now that dad's Model A has come back from its intensive restoration it is ready to be insured and driven. I want to take my boys, 2 1/2 year old twins and my daughter, 5 months, out in it. Being a wooden framed car produced without seatbelts what are the legal requirements? I know there are companies that can retrofit belts but as it's only going into a 1"x 2" piece of wood I wonder how effective it actually is. I have already accepted the fact that a baby seat isn't going to fit safely so my daughter will have to wait. I am also prepared to let my boys run without seatbelts on the local run, supervised by police on closed roads. Is there any hope of legally being able to go on road trips with the boys safely? Dad is currently lining up his next car. A 1933 ford speedstar with bench seat and no belts. I'm guessing it's going to take a miracle to get the kids in that on tho

Beautiful cars! I think the golden safety rule in older cars is DON'T CRASH! You're not going to come out of it well regardless of whether you're restrained or not.

I'm hoping that the rarity of such cars avoids crashes but don't want to get 6 points for a spin through town after catching an officer looking for tickets

Surely if they weren’t fitted originally then it’s not a legal requirement, just the same as any other belt.

I knew that was the case for adults but unsure about children.

I'm pretty sure that if it didn't come with them, then it doesn't need to have them fitted. I have driven cars without seat belts and had my children in the car. My youngest was in a baby basket on the back seat of my '66 Mustang whenever we took it out. The thing is, just be careful, really careful, and remember that there are a lot of Richard Heads out there who have some how managed to pass a driving test! Also, get ready to be blasted by everyone for being an irresponsible parent. Everyone will tell you that, but remember, we all survived it when we were kids!
Lastly, do whatever you feel you need to do to be happy with the safety of your children. I know that I said that I drove my '66 Mustang with my baby in her basket on the back seat, but for longer journeys I did have it ratchet tied to the framework behind the rear seat, and I also had a bungee cargo net across the top of the basket. Not sure how much either of those things would've helped, but I felt like I was atleast trying my best.

Legally? Yes. EDIT - No. see Seth's post below
Safely? That's a personal decision. You can drive as carefully as you like and still be involved in a crash. Also, seatbelts became a legal requirement for a reason...
The hot rod could easily have belts added, even 3 point ones. I'm planning on having them fitted to the next addition to the MLT fleet, a 50s truck

As someone with kids, if ur gonna manage to get rid of the buggers, going in a 1930s motor without a seatbelt is the way to do it!
On a serious note. Drive careful, and give your kids memories not many others will have.

I personally couldn't do it. I only have to transport other people's kids, but I couldn't live with the guilt if something happened. We have seat belts in both our cars for the dog.
Next time you're out on the road , check other people's driving standards. Appalling. And that's before you notice the one's texting and swiping!
I know we all survived being in cars without seat belts, but there was far less traffic on the road, driving was treated as a privilege and something to be proud of, not just leasing the latest Audi to impress the neighbours.
THERE WERE NO MOBILE PHONES!!! People had far more respect for others as well. How do these people justify sending a "put the dinner on" text as more important than a child's life?

Just to add, I'm not completely risk-averse with the children in my care, memories of exciting (maybe even rule-breaking on occasion) are precious things, and that's why when one of our lads had the chance to be a passenger in a Subaru Impreza rally car around a muddy field I let him, despite being unable to contact his Social Worker for permission. It was probably a once in a lifetime opportunity, he had a helmet, FIA seats and a rollcage. He apparently screamed and shouted the whole way round, absolutely loved it!

I know we all survived being in cars without seat belts..... i survived leaving a carry cot , which had itself left the rear seat of a vitesse convertible which had itself left terrafirma over a local hump-back bridge! chuck 'em in and drive on , give the nanny state the bird!!

Neighbour's children got a ride to school in my Wolseley 1300 some years ago. When they got in I told them to buckle up. My own children laughed like hell when they reached for the non-existent seatbelts in the back seat. When my eldest was a baby we dailied a TK Bedford. He rode in a baby seat secured to the seat frame with a load binder.
