I go to the island of Madeira every year, there is quite a large number of classics/retro over there (that’s islands for you I guess), but every year I see the same 504 pick up, with an old guy driving it. Beige it is with a wooden pick up body (they all seem to have these over there) He must be a gardener or similar as it’s always full of hedge cuttings etc

Didn't most of them end up going off to South Africa? The 4x4 ones look awesome, are they factory or are they a Dangel modification like they did with the 505s?

I doubt South Africa as they made them there too and don’t allow the import of used vehicles. However, I think if you expand to a more general “Africa”, perhaps even West Africa, you’d be dead right as they love them out there. Think you are correct with Dangel, though I’m no expert. Don’t remember ever seeing one of those in Africa though.

There were only ever two vehicles that got a reputation in Africa of being unbreakable, shall we say. Peugeot 504 and a Toyota Stout....... A Toyota stout was a beefed up Toyota Hilux ,2wd column shift

I have been to Tunisia twice, years back, and 504 pick ups were EVERYWHERE! All that I saw were horrendously overloaded and being driven at about at 8mph. One had been so constantly overloaded its chassis had bowed to the point that the drivers door overlapped the door shut and was being held closed with a lump of rope. The driver did not have a care in the world. Tonka toy cars long before Toyota got in on the act.

Most of the 504s I remember were either a mid blue or a very pale blue grey colour as well as the orange previously mentioned, and a fair number of maroon or blue vans all very popular within the farming community.

i know these were a cheap answer for an everyday workhorse, and were every where in the late 80's heading into the 90's then just as if sooty had waved his magic wand and said those immortal words "izzy wizzy lets get busy" boom! they vanished over night, has anyone on this forum got one locked (rotting) away. even the older ones look good Peugeot 404 BE-70-83 by Ivo Vastré, on Flickr This is the elderly close relative of the 504 but known has the 404 - bit more appealing in my book with the distinct look of the UK built Austin / Morris A60 range

I worked for a Peugeot dealer back in the early 80's for a short time - when the 504 pickups were sought after - they had by then built a good reputation for a being a solid workhorse and were premium priced when compared to other otherings like the P100 - I recall repairing one after frontal accident damage and replaced the offside front inner wing / chassis leg + all front panels - once painted I refitted the engine & box but for the life of me I could not get the hydraulic clutch to bleed - only after several phone calls to the Peugeot technical team result in valid response that worked - and this came in broken English from a time served mechanic in a French dealership - the only way to bleed the system was backwards from the slave cylinder to the master - a length of suitable diameter hose from the bleed nipple on the front brake calliper to the bleed nipple on the slave cylinder and used the brake system to bleed the clutch system upwards resolved the problem.

Had one for ages, some workhorse, good to carry a ton and a half. 100 4" blocks were a bit too much at a ton and three quarters!
Finally died age 15 when I was rear-ended by some plonker in a Mk3 Escort. Had a piece of 6" channel iron across the back for the hitch, needless to say the Escort came off the worst. Chassis had slight bend, kept it going 'til the next test.
