It's Mrs Del's 70th birthday soon, and I'm organising a secret weekend away. Train tickets, hotel, restaurant and show tickets all booked, and I was going to just book a cab to the station. But then I thought 'sod that!'. So then I started looking at chauffeurs and executive travel, and they all seem to be boring modern Mercs and Beemers. Does anyone know of a service that can offer the same with a classic? Something like a Silver Shadow, or a Mk2 or XJ6 Jag? It's only a short trip (three miles or so). Would any of the wedding car firms be interested in that sort of job?

Will need to be a wedding type specialist as Private Hire generally has a 10 year age limit to be able to plate the vehicle , so that's restricted your market choice

I think that you are hoping that someone here on this forum could help out. Well, if I were close and did not have a semi modern classic Mercedes I would have loved to help you out!! It would only take me about 15 minutes and I would have a feel good feeling for the rest of the day!!
So, I really hope someone here can be a proud chauffeur and help a mate!!

I think that you are hoping that someone here on this forum could help out. That's honestly not the reason, it's just a rather niche enquiry and I thought some of our number would know the answer. If someone can, it would be very much appreciated (and remunerated)!

Will need to be a wedding type specialist as Private Hire generally has a 10 year age limit to be able to plate the vehicle , so that's restricted your market choice It's less now in many places. I know when I was more connected to the industry it was said that if the vehicle was plated it had to be less than 5 years old, but then once plated it could be kept on for as long as the vehicle was in 'good condition'. Naturally, a number of private hires took the Michael ; I've seen 6 year old cabs that are absolute death traps, and I've also seen number plates 'move' onto very very similar looking cars, as in going from a Car X facelift to a pre-facelift 'Car X', but with a few 'facelift' bits thrown on... So then the council changed the ruling again. From now on, while you could only plate a car that was less than 5 years old, it would have to be removed once 8 years old unless the vehicle could be proven to be in 'exceptional' condition. Given the council test the cars, 'exceptional' can be seen to be a very loosely based term. Most saw that as any vehicle over 8 years old having no chance. So yes, a wedding type place is certainly about the only way to do it. Out of the moderns, it would have to be either a new Merc or preferably a new Jag XJ, albeit the latter aren't big sellers.
