Hi all,
Does anybody know of a way to make an old stamped VIN number more legible?
I have replaced the chassis on my Landrover and i have kept the front right dumbiron from the old chassis as this has the original VIN, but its not in great condition!
Any ideas on how I can make it clearer/easier to read?
Thanks

Wipe black paint in the crevices maybe? I think any attempt to restamp or whatever might look a bit 'stolen car' lol

Yeah i was thinking of giving that a go, thanks - I will definitely not be restamping, for the reasons you mentioned!
The VIN is legible, but only just, so really just looking for a way to enhance the readability of what is there.

And I won't sit down. And I won't shut up. And most of all I will not grow up.

Dyechem for checking casings for cracks will probably show em up a bit better as the metal should be slightly compressed where the letters are.

I'm pretty sure thats the stuff that you can use to reveal the original numbers when they have been ground out too.

Previously, I've used a combination of Jenolite rust remover and a wire brush to read serial numbers stamped on cast iron engine bocks.
For soft aluminium plates, perhaps try a fine brass wire brush or wire wool, etc., possibly with some Solvol Autosol (chrome polish), Brasso or similar.
