Good morning everyone! Some of you may know me and/or my car from various Retro Rides events and a terribly inactive build thread. I'm the owner of the ratty Triumph Herald sporting an amazing technicolor dream bonnet which has the turbo MX5 engine. This year it completed Goodwood. Santa Pod and Shelsley Walsh. All the events showed up various tweaks the car needed. Small ones like brakes which could stop you more than once, suspension which didn't feel like riding a space hopper, boost management on the turbo so it could accelerate and a clutch which would cope with that acceleration when I could use it. Like I said, minor.
It's all been building up to my main event which is the RBRR. It happens every two years and to put it as shortly as I can; A bunch of nutters drive non-stop covering 2000 miles in 48 hours in a Triumph. This year there are currently 137 cars entered and each one must have at least two people in it. We leave Knebworth at 6pm on Friday 5th October. Around 8am on Saturday we're at John O'Groats, 8am Sunday we reach Lands End and if all goes well we're back at Knebworth 6pm that night. As you can imagine, it's not easy!
Since 1990 the event has incorporated a charity aspect and to date we've raised £607k.
1990 British Heart Foundation £13,500.00
1992 Imperial Cancer Research Fund £8,500.00
1994 Leukaemia Research Fund £11,500.00
1996 Alzheimer Research Trust £20,700.00
1998 Macmillan Cancer Relief £37,500.00
2000 Children with Leukaemia £40,500.00
2002 Multiple Sclerosis Society £37,000.00
2004 Children with Leukaemia £47,000.00
2006 BLISS £52,000.00
2008 RNLI £67,000.00
2010 MIND Mental Health Charity £51,500.00
2012 Children with Cancer UK £65,000.00
2014 Macmillan Cancer Support £59,500.00
2016 Guide Dogs for the Blind £95,800.00
Total £607,000.00
And this is the reason behind this thread. This year it is for Epilepsy Research UK. Yesterday we attended the drivers meeting for the event and received a presentation. I'm not going to lie, I thought I knew a good amount about epilepsy but it turns out I didn't. I didn't know about the side effects of the drugs, that people over 60 are most likely to suddenly get it, that 87 people are diagnose a day or that there's 40 types. But I'm not here to preach, I'm here to ask for money.
Below is a link to our teams just giving page. I'd be extremely grateful if anyone could donate a small amount. All of it goes directly to the charity and none goes to the team or organisers.
