Ok so having built a 20vt mk2 golf, and planning on putting one in my mk3 caddy too, I can’t help having naughty thoughts about what else I can put one in.
The cheapest, lightest and best handling (IRS) car I can think of is a cinquecento. I put a 1242 in one years ago and stripped it out, it was a massive laugh.
What do you lot think? Have I lost the plot?

I keep having naughty thoughts too! Oh, you mean car related I'd say do it! But I'm not sure there is enough room between chassis legs to get the 1.8t and necessary gearbox in there

why not put one in the back, and the front. A twin engined 4.0 chinquecento would be amazing. Twinquecento perhaps?

Lupo has been done loads, not cheap enough, not light enough and not IRS.
If I managed to pull it off, I’d consider putting one in the back too. It would be a reasonably cheap monster! I reckon i could build one all in for less than £2k

on the opposite end of the scale , ive got one putting out 340bhp in a spaceframed landrover with a 6 speed sequential mounted to it.
as for small hatches I think anything vw had already been done to death, as have clio's. its got to be something small and tin can like

A2 is a good shout, kerb weight for them is 895-1095kg so a stripped one should see 800kg

They are great - all aluminium so no rust to deal with and they can be picked up as a non-runner for very little money. I have a tdi90 which is great so the thought of a 20vt conversion is fantastic.

+1 on an Audi A2. I had one with a nice remap ((125hp and it flew with just the 1.4 diesel. I've heard of one with a five-cylinder TT engine but I'm sure the sky's the limit if you know what you're doing. If you managed to source one of the 3L models they're even lighter with thinner glass and underfloor aero.

I have an Octavia vRS with a good engine and a damaged body, and a decent bodied rust free series 2 Peugeot 106 with a wheezy 1.1 engine............180bhp in a 106 as a daily driver sounds ideal to me lol

I've had thoughts about throwing one in an FTO or even a tweaked up PD130/150.
Great handling and the 20vt is probably lighter than the original V6 I should think, 1250kg as std (I reckon you could get it to 1000kg without too much hassle) and dirt cheap now.
Failing that, any J coupe that would offend the purists if it had a VAG lump in it :-) MR2 MK1, Del Sol, Gen 7 celica, eg civic....
