Hi all,
After having the clutch done on my 106 and realising it won't pass the next MOT without wasting more money I've been thinking - I might be well served by spending some amount of money on a nice semi-modern daily rather than buying £300 chod every 6 months and just dealing with the issues they bring.
So - what do I get? Ideally want something 2003+, good on fuel (I was thinking diesel but modern DPF/Injectors are rubbish - maybe a small engine petrol) - I may well start doing 50 - 70 miles a day or so soon. Safe. Cruise control, maybe heated seats. 4 door maybe? I take the niece and nephew out a bit. Something that doesn't cost the earth to maintain and isn't a ticking time bomb.
Something that doesn't rust faster than it accelerates would be nice for a change too. :-)
I know this is Retro rides but maybe you guys will have some suggestions!
Cheers

I had the exact same thought a few weeks ago, ended up with a 2007 Mondeo ST Tdci, ok they have their problems but I shopped about and got one that's had the work done, and i bloody love it, plenty of toys, decent ooomph (coming from 25 year old cars) and 40-50mpg depending where I am. Still got my Astra though.

01-05 Passat 1.9 130bhp TDI 5 speed. Bombproof. No injector or DPF worries. Easy and cheap to fix. Had 5 of them and they are the best daily you could ask for. My latest one was €190 and is 180bhp.

I have a late 2004 MG ZT+ 120. 67,000 miles. Just had 4 new tyres, new discs and pads, major service, cambelt and water pump and has also had the "ultimate" HG kit fitted, discs an pads, new ICV which a common fault on these. Immaculate car, well spec'd, lovely to drive. Feels modern and solid, but being a "proper" MG with it's "retro" styling it looks the part. Don't have a photo to hand, but identical to this. Same reg, colour, wheels etc

Volvo S60. D5 engine is a peach Plenty around for that sort of money. Comfy on my 60 mile a day commute, 50mpg, get up and go when you need it.....
DPF issues shouldn't be an issue if you're doing that sort of mileage, it's frequent short hops (so engine not getting to temp) that causes trouble.

This ^^ New Gen Saab 9-5/9-3. Lot of car for your money, a little bit different, very safe, well built. Spares Ok as parts shared with GM, great value due to lack of dealerships. uksaabs.co.uk for info. Slight bias as after a lot of research I just bought an original gen 9-3 Convertible

Mk5 golf gti. Stage 1 map releases good power, they handle well out of the box, and decently specced inside.

Honda Civic the 2006 onwards 2.2 diesel
Just got rid of my last one at 150k after 90k in 5 years. (gone to its bigger CRV brother as needed more space for dogs and pram...) Had two previously as Company cars. I found them to be reliable, economical, well speced if you get the EX with all the toys and have enough grunt to be able to press on if needs be. ( i got fed up of previous Golf's and A3's killing their turbo's/clutches/gearboxes on a semi regular basis)
2 k should get you a decent low miler especially if you go via the auctions...

Octavia. Passat. Corolla. Camry. Avensis. Accord. Civic. You may have to manage without the heated seats.

As has been mentioned above Volvo's seem amazing value at the moment. Join a few of the FB groups and you'll loads coming up for sale well within your price range. I know it is bigger than you initially suggested, but seems to be a lot of car for the money.
Or, again as above, MG ZR or ZS. Come in reliable (despite what people say) petrol and diesel flavours.

I've got a SEAT Leon Mk1 Cupra TDI and it's OK to be fair - if you're going for a 130hp or 150hp version make sure you've got FSH, and for the 150hp see if the cam's been replaced (a good thing). I've owned mine for 7 years, it's now on 200k miles and still returns 60 odd MPG on a motorway run. Handles alright, and though I've had things go wrong with it they're relatively simple to work on.

Shame, cause I had heard great things about the d5 engine I keep looking at Saab 9-5's and getting tempted atm... Saabs would be my second choice these days, had a 9-3 for 7 years before it drank it's oil and exploded (my fault, run welll past service time) Diesels reliable but unexciting, all criminally cheap now.

I have a D5, and whilst it's a decent car, make sure you get one that's been very well looked after. Mine wasnt, so slowly replacing most of it lol.
A mate at work loves Saab's, he bought a 2006/7 9-3 Diesel (it had a dpf). He bought a well looked after, FSH one. He spent most of his ownership swearing at it and replacing bits (the GM bits) traded it in for a couple hundred quid just to get rid of the thing. Got a Mini Cooper S now lol.
My pre dpf 06 plate mk5 golf (plus) 1.9tdi (105bhp) was bought 4.5 years ago, blind from auction. 146k on clock, 2 owners & FSH. Apart from having paint work by Stevie Wonder, it's been great. Now on 163k, although mileage hasn't gone up loads it's used everyday.
It's had a in tank lift pump (£80 fitted), indicator stalk (£30) & a new door latch (£30). Obviously it's had a cambelt (£200), tyres, brakes (all disks, pads & both rear calipers),& battery (£80).

VAG 1.9 PDs are good but walk away from smokey or excessively tappety engines; the camshafts can go in them, and I've had one go in a 'safe' '06 Passat 106 TDI B6. I wouldn't touch a B6 Passat however. Google 'B6 Steering lock issues' at your pleasure as well as EPB issues.
Mondeos are a good shout as they are within the money but it would have to be a petrol for me, unless you get one for £1k and are OK to bin it if it goes bang. Golfs IME are too pricey for a Mk5 in good tidy condition, and Saabs do now have scarce parts. If you crash some of them and the parts go, you are looking at a write-off.
