hi, right so I'm sure some have seen pics of my brown '79 sapporo on here before. last year i was lucky enough to stumble across a pair for sale up north. one, a parts car, i only hung onto for a handfull of spares before selling on to another owner. however i have recently made space in my workshop, and a little time for my red car. back in september it was mot'd and running well. the paintwork, a little rust and a peeling vinyl roof was letting it down though. i decided to change from the muddy-red colour to something a little more eye catching! my parts car was a metalic electric blue- an original factory colour. so i had a few litres mixed to match.... i have only spent a couple of weekends so far on the car, consisting of; an evening of tear-down, day of welding, lots of hours of prep and priming, and tonight i have layed colour and clear-coat on the shell. got the doors, bootlid and bonnet to do next as soon as i have the car out of the booth. then i can cut and polish and begin to re-assemble the car. here are some pics of so far...

engine bay painted up first. the bays are so big, i was able to strip out all ancilliarys, and spray with the block still in situ!

weird place to rust out, but had two massive holes in the rear quater, just in front of the rear arch. these had been previously bodged up with wire and filler! bit of rot the other side of the arch, and a section of rust lurking under the ripped vinyl above the gutter. other than that pretty solid, not bad for a 40 year old car!

so far I'm pleased with progress on the sapporo. the only concern i do have is how the edge will come up around the screen rubbers when i un peel the masking. normally i would remove the screens. however its impossible to get new rubbers for these. on top of that if i crack a screen during removal then I'm stuck big time- my parts car has found a new home, and from research i have done, looks like there are less than 30 of these in the uk, and only a handfull on the road now.
i do still have a few decisions to make on the car yet. one being ride height and wheels. my brown colt is a couple of inches lower and realy drives nice, and looks the part. not sure if i should go down that rout or not with this one though... then the wheels, I'm swaying toward keeping the original steels on it. the interior is grey, so i thought mayby a nice gun-metal grey for the wheels, and i may even spray the rear light panal, and front grille in gun-metal too...
anyway, thoughts, opinions and advice are always welcome, thanks, matt

Always liked that blue on these, & makes a better contrast with your brown example. I would't trust the idea of an old vinyl roof either, though I have seen leather-grained vinyl film if you changed your mind. I'd be more tempted by the "brushed stainless" film though. The original steel wheels are a nice design too. Great to see the progress.

Looks top!
I've got a mate whos a sprayer who looks down on cars painted in sheds. That looks great to me and I'd be more than happy to have that. Great sense of satisfaction from doing it yourself too (y)

hi thanks for the comments.
the brushed stainless film sounds tempting- I'm going to have to have a look into that!
lots of people don't like the idea of spraying in sheds, but to be honest i have done loads of cars, and i find as long as its a good set up- i.e dust free, decent extraction, proper compressor, good lighting then you can turn out good paint jobs. just you may end up cutting and polishing out a few specks of dust or an odd fly once in a while. i am hopefull that one day i will be able to up grade to a proper oven booth though!

I'd be more tempted by the "brushed stainless" film though. Brushed stainless film, that sounds pretty cool! It would look superb with that blue too, especially if you only did it where the original vinyl was!

I always loved this look. The 1978 Plymouth Sapporo, They did the same treatment on the Galant Lambda (Japanese Spec). Maybe worth thinking about.

I used to own the blue one in your photos. I know it passed hands a few times after I sold it. Poor thing!
I also viewed the red car years ago when the original owner was selling it. Made an offer but was 'outbid' by someone by £50. gggrrrr! Do you know the history of it? The list of famous people that car has carried around London is quite something.
Great to see it getting a full restoration and the colour is lovely. Mine has a vinyl roof and while it works well, I think they look better without. Hopefully your edges come out OK!

yeh, i did feel sorry for that blue one. to be honest it wasnt overly bad, looked worse than it was, the cills, lower wings, rear arches and doors were shot, but to be honest if only you could get repair panals- that would have been saved with a few weekends of welding.
no i don't know any of the history of the red one, how come it has carried famous people around london? I'm curios now...
i was being a bit daring with the colour change, but after having that blue dona car, the colour realy suited the shape. i am a fan of vinyl roofs, but i cant see it going as well with the bright blue colour, plus i hate trying to work with any sort of fabric!!
how's your car going? last time i heared from you it was tucked away..

Looks amazing Matt. Another Sapporo saved! Well done. Cant to see it finished. you should get to see it next year! by the end of this month it should all be put back together and in a drivable condition again, then i can tuck it away for winter. next year i will have to get my dad insured on it, and i will hang onto the brown one. today i have just sprayed up the wheels, front grille panal and rear panal and light surrounds. dark gun metal/ graphite grey metalic colour, cant wait to get them fitted on the car to see the outcome !

CLU3 62T was owned from new until 2015 by Bill Orchard, a photographer who specialised in music/fashion/culture for many of the big names on Fleet Street - The Times, Mirror, Mail, Telegraph etc. He also worked for TV companies and was a big part of the exploding music scene through the 1960's, 70's and 80's. He toured with The Beatles and Rolling Stones. In his hey-dey he was one of the 'go-to' photographers. The Sapp obviously came later but you name a 1970's or 80's pop rock icon and he's taken them to and from sets in that car. McCartney, Harrison, Jagger, Moon, Blondie, Lulu, Bowie etc. The passenger seat has seen some very famous bums (and mine!!). It was only through talking to him when I went to view the car that I found out what he did and who he'd driven around. He was so modest about it. I guess to him driving stars around was pretty normal. The advert suggested nothing more than an old Mitsi in a barn. He loved the car and it's been to all sorts of places. Imagine if it could talk! I think the shade of red was called Canyon. It had a CB radio installed. Not sure if it still has?
Bill has also photographed the Queen at Buck House but I don't think Liz hitched a ride out of town afterwards! Mines still tucked up in storage. Came out last year for a show at Beaulieu and was going this year but it rained all day. I'm not so precious it can't get wet but a car show and 200 mile round trip in the rain is pretty miserable so decided to pass.

your cars looking good, prefer the vinyl coming down the pillars like that, clu3 6t2 had the vinyl ending at the top.
i did a couple of showes this year in my brown one, and met up with Paul- 'taiyoboy' in his silver sapp too.
cant belive the car has that much history to it! thanks for the info, and i did wonder why the car had that big aerial sticking out the back, i removed it and welded the hole up. theres nothing left inside the car apart from an original radio now.
theres still a few of these cars on the road, Paul knows a couple and i have recently found another guy with a sapp, think theres someone else on here too, if i remember rightly he has a white one and a brown one.
