I've seen an interesting car which was imported in the late 90s and is still on its original (for the time) v5. It hasn't been on the road this millenium and was untaxed as of 1999 according to the DVLA tax checker website.
The guy who is currently selling the car is not the guy on the v5. I wouldn't be looking to pay much for the car, as I'm not sure what will happen when I try to register the car in my name with the DVLA.
Has anyone else had a similar situation and how did it go?
Thanks.

My only concern would be whether logbook you get is the 'valid' logbook, and not an older item.

Perhaps a full HPI as I think you put the log book number into those (not a £3 by text job, proper HPI one) which would tell you if it's the latest log book or not?

If it's a blue V5 then you can still use it to register the car in your name. It remains valid. If a red one has subsequently been issued to the same name/address it won't matter.
If it's an old logbook and the name/address has changed since then you'll run into bother. If there's good reason for it being in someone else's name and otherwise seems legit I wouldn't worry.

Thanks guys for the suggestions.
Very good idea Clanstop about using the online DVLA version. Possibly any problems with ownership *may* be flagged up at that stage, eg. 13 digit Document Reference number (DRN) that you have to enter in not being the current one?
Do DRN's change each time a new V5 is issued? I seem to think they do?
Thanks again.

I've bought 2 cars this year on blue V5's. Both were posted off and came back fine. The online system will pick up if a newer document has been issued. I've not tried change of ownership to see what happens. When trying to tax via an old V5 it will say a newer document exists and stop you there. You can still tax at the post office on the old green slip.
DRN's will be different between blue and red V5's for the same vehicle.

^ Thank you. This does sound right as someone with an old V5 could use their DRN to get another (new) V5 for a vehicle they've sold!

In the circumstances I'd be inclined take a prepared bill of sale along with you, ask him to write his details in and sign to declare that it is his property to dispose of.

What MkX said. ive just done this with a car ive just bought DO NOT SEND IT OFF TO DVLA !! change the details on line www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle and hey prest 3 days later fresh new log book .Reason i did this my mate sent the blue logbook back and they wanted to inspect the car took 6 mths to get the logbook!! trust me Except they don't accept them for the old smaller than A4 logbooks i.e 1990s logbookes. A few people have tried the online method, including RetroWarwicK of the parish. In short, the new system is good but for older logbooks it's very much still a lottery as to whether it'll get accepted or not online. Another mate of mine on here is a no-goer with a 90s logbook via online processing. Bear this in mind too. The DVLA will have a few changes on their hands lately, especially with the MOT exemption and GDPR law changes.

I thought I would check on the DVLA site and it appears there may be a newer v5 out there somewhere so I'm out on this one.
Thanks for all your help guys.

You could always ring the DVLA if you wish to pursue it .
