There is retro content in this the offending car was a MX5 I admit I do sometimes get annoyed by cyclists particularly as they always seem to have events in a Sunday morning on the, country, road that I drive down to take the dogs for a walk and cycle 2 or 3 abreast. However this is shocking, a 81 year driver basically takes out 3 cyclists in his MX5 how nobody was killed is astounding. sorry Daily Mail linkSo kudos for still driving a MX5 at 81 but I think he should swap it for a bus pass! Looking at the video it does seem like the cyclist moves into the path of the car, but the car was passing very close to the cyclists due to oncoming traffic. Looks like there was no oncoming traffic after the crash so just impatience on the part of the driver.

Good. God. Driven that road a few times, roads are narrow but that’s taking the mickey. Hopefully he won’t bother trying to retake his test after the two year ban.

Yeah the video gives the impression of the cyclist moving over (possibly without looking ??) Some cyclists do dice with death, I was about to pass an old lad on a bike earlier today and without looking back he swung round a manhole cover by moving in front of me not the other way between kerb and manhole cover (the obvious and sensible option on this occasion) but then carried on down the middle our lane, on another occasion a cyclist swung out in front of me to get the angle on the corner , again without glancing back, seems a daft way to ride !?!?

I've cycled alot, all my life, and have too many bikes, but over recent years the new wave of cyclists have made it a nightmare to be a cyclist.
The way I allways rode was keep in, single file but not in the gutter and if possible don't use roads where you are likely to go unnoticed or wear hivis.
Now people have the take your lane mentality , which means although you should (And they want you to) give a cars width when passing, you'll likely be unable to as they are often riding middle of the lane, two abreast having a chat with a mate... Same with how they pass traffic, you should never pass on the inside of moving traffic unless in a cycle lane, but loads do. As for moving over or avoiding potholes, if rather lift the wheel or hop the object than run the risk of being rear ended by a car, a "lifesaver" should allways be employed to change lanes or position, same as on a motorbike

you should (And they want you to) give a cars width when passing This is the long and short of it. The roads are a state with holes everywhere and there are bad bike riders and bad drivers, so this is the safest for everyone. A little bit of consideration from everyone goes a long way.

Nasty accident, the MX5 driver has to take the lion's share of the blame; he can see the whole picture and should have waited until the road was clear to overtake. He was too close to the cyclists.
But it did seem to me that the cyclist who was hit pulled out towards the middle of the road, perhaps to overtake or come alongside the rider ahead, right at the wrong moment without even a quick glance over his shoulder to check if it was safe.

This a "lifesaver" should allways be employed to change lanes or position, same as on a motorbike and when in a car. Might have saved the cyclist not that it excuses the driver. When I was learning to drive this was drilled into me

How some motorists treat cyclists is shocking. Twice just lately when I've been making a right turn I've had cars come past me, the second one had to mount the pavement to miss me!

No all of them Dan, just some who feel the rules don't apply, or are too dim to think about their actions. Same with car drivers. I had one tear through a red light the other day nearly hitting my car. She was using her phone and had a kid in the car with her.
Simple fact of the matter is that there are c**ts in every walk of life.
My biggest bugbear at the moment is Deliveroo moped riders around Canterbury, saw one last week doing 25-30mph over a junction into a no entry up a one way street, having ridden through bollards, so no one would have expected anyone to have come from there anyway. Dude was wearing a helmet, but shorts and t-shirt and looking at his phone! I couldn't believe the stupidity.

All good points, it is the selfish r soles that are usually to blame for accidents or at best near misses, a few months ago i was sat behind a woman at lights who had a fag in her mouth, a coffee in one hand and her phone in the other, a recipe for disaster ! I made a decision there and then to go in the exact opposite direction of her whichever way she went 😀😀 p.s. she drove off like that 😳

Yes, it wasn't meant to be an anti cyclist rant or old drivers, just an amazing bit of footage. The cyclists were amazingly lucky, and yes wear a helmet if cycling.
Whatever the group there will always be idiots who spoil it for others.

I like to ride on and off road, and I feel it is my responsibility to protect myself. Always wear a helmet and try to be aware of what is happening around you. I'm also a keen driver and understand that at times it can be frustrating overtaking bikes, but not as frustrating as going to jail for 2 years, losing your license and possibly losing your job etc.
If you look at the video carefully you can see the cyclist pulls out of the gutter, possibly to avoid a pothole or drain cover in the road, just as the car overtakes, but he was still too close when overtaking. The other point to note is that the sun was very low in the sky and maybe made it more difficult for an 81 year old to see, but at the end of the day the motorist was to blame and that's why he was prosecuted.
