Thinking about a new daily upto £4k
Want something, 4 wheel drive, petrol, quick and family friendly. Also nothing too fragile and something I can work on - competent diy mechanics.
I'm guessing Impreza? I know nothing about them so can you educate me on the different models, specs, good points, bad points and what to look for when buying.
Any other options other than impreza?

Impreza: Good points: Rally burble. Bad points: 17MPG.
Oh and have fun doing a timing belt, cam cover gasket, plugs or just about any job in the engine bay...

I'm in the process of importing a BP5 Subaru Legacy from Japan. 260bhp, auto, 4wd, estate. And looks good. Not retro but ticks all the other boxes!

Two others spring to mind - Nissan Stagea and the Mitsubishi Legnum/Galant.

Taking from axeboy's thread about his Toyota CROWN, the Mitsi AirTrek? Not sure you can pick one up for under £4k though....
For your budget I'd be looking at an Impreza WRX wagon or maybe an older Legacy wagon.

How about a T5 V70XC or XC70 Volvo? Or an Audi?

Would not suggest the V70XC from the first generation, 4x4 is notorious for failing. Works with a vicous coupling system, which costs a fortune to replace.
Mate of mine had a V70 R AWD which has the same 4x4 system.
Would suggest an older type Legacy/Forester though, those things are brilliant! Forester can be found in Turbo-S spec which makes it quite fast!
