My car uses an old dynamo which, due to space limitations, I'd like to upgrade to an alternator with an internal voltage regulator. The car has a Lucas voltage regulator fitted behind the dash which is hard to get at. Can I run the alternator through the old voltage regulator for some time before I rewire the car behind the dash? The old Dynamo was a 20-30amp unit and the new alternator is a 50-60amp item

Hi, There is a certain amount of rewiring to do but it's simple enough The two small wires need to be connected together, the bigger brown wires also need to be connected together, the black earth wire is not now needed. The brown wire to/from the dynamo is not sufficient if the car tries to draw the 60A the alt can supply so run another brown wire the same size or replace it with heavier cable.

My dynamo had one wire running to the charge light and the power wire running to the voltage regulator. My new alternator has 4 wires.  B+ to the battery side of the starter solenoid. S looped back to the B+ terminal on the alternator. L probably connects to the old ignition light wire? Can I also loop the IG-wire to the B+ terminal on the alternator? |
