Friction welding axle shafts, cost & who to use?

Don't they just chop the ends off , remove a section then weld it in a conventional manner ?

Hi, Yes, that's OK for the axle tubes but I think the OP is asking about the half shafts themselves.

somewhere in the back of my mind, the interceptor used a Dana 44, or at least a Jeg non IRS axle, If that the case it could be worth having a look about for narrower axles, if thats not working I got shafts made in the states to my spec by Moser, this was done by going thru Geoff Hauser, he is in wellingborough, not far from the pod, they were not mega expensive either........

Scim axles are the same afaik, and come in 52 and 56 inch widths. Jensen is 60 inch so scim axles will make it a fair bit narrower. I've never messed with a Jensen axle, but I can't see why you can't just narrow the casing and fit scim axles, job done. I have narrowed scim ones though, and the axle tubes are thick as f-k, 1/4" thick tube!

Actually, I did once sell a scim axle with powerlock to a guy who was gunna swap the hubs and Fit it to a interceptor, he said he'd done it before so I guess it's compatable.

I seem to remember the inner axle splines are mildly different between powerlock and open diffs though, nothing major, I think you have to grind a bit off non-powerlock ones for them to fit home into the powerlock diff properly.

There's a place in or near Newcastle (Tyne and Wear not Staffs) that does it, my friend had some done recently for a engine conversion in his camper, I'll ask him for their name. Definitely friction welded.
