Ok there are a load of them out there in fact the first internal combustion engine ever was indeed a boxer - just so that others that are unfamiliar with the term 'Boxer Engine' here is a simple explanation derived courtesy of Wikipedia 'In 1896, Karl Benz invented the first internal combustion engine with horizontally opposed pistons.[1] He called it the kontra engine, as the action of each side opposed the action of the other. This design has since been called the "boxer" engine because each pair of pistons moves in and out together, rather like the gloves of a boxer.[3] The boxer engine has pairs of pistons reaching TDC simultaneously' Those of you whom know me on here know exactly where my starting point is going be - so pics of 'Boxer Engined' cars only please

Right then for those of you that thought that Jowett just built road plugging motors Jowett R1 (same 1500cc boxer engine has in the Jupiter & Javelin) - Jowett were class winners in the 1950 Le Mans, Class 1 - 2 in the 1951 Monte Carlo rally, an outright win in the 1951 Lisbon International rally - another 1 - 2 at Dundrod in 1951, and further class wins at Le Mans in 1952 & 1953 The Wyile Javelin - Supercharged Javelin 1500cc boxer engine - successfully competed in the 1953 Australian Grand Prix and finished 9th - then went to be very successfully campaigned throughout Aus in sprints & hill climbs

Here is one from a friend of mine,Subaru Legacy 2.5,twin turbo, better exhaust, goes like stink! He imported it himself from Japan, not a beaty queen, but therefore was dirt cheap, and as said,it goes,goes,goes... Will be restored-improved cosmetically one day.

My introduction to the joys of a Boxer and still one of my favourite 'point to point' cars So much so I still have the steering wheel and keys from the first one 20yrs since it met the big scrap yard in the sky (funnily enough it was rotten...)

What is the difference between a flat engine and a boxer engine? Before I make a huge faux pas and post the wrong thing.

Boxers are horizontally opposed engines, flat engines are basically V-engines,but the degree of the V is 180 degrees,so: flat.

What is the difference between a flat engine and a boxer engine? Before I make a huge faux pas and post the wrong thing. Not much difference visually from the outside. Both have pistons that run in cylinders parallel to the ground. The big difference comes in with the crankshaft, and how the conrod are connected to it. In a Boxer engine, each conrod has its own big end bearing journal to connect to. On a flat engine, two conrods are connected to each bigend journal . If you had a boxer crank next to a 4 cylinder crank,it would look pretty similar apart from the firing order being visibly different. If you had a boxer crank next to a flat or v engine crank,it would look totally different. Boxer engines horizontally opposed pistons move in opposite directions to each other, whilst on a flat engine they move in the same direction. Will look for a photo.😊
